"Dr. Amiri is an excellent psychiatrist. Unlike others in this line of work, Dr. Amiri listens to his patients and cooperatively develops a health plan that both he and his patients are comfortable with. Over the 40 years of my life, I've lost count of the humber of psychiatrists (and psychologists) I've been to. And my experience has been for the psychiatrist to reign on high and dictate the medications that he or she believes will be to my benefit. This is not Dr. Amiri's way at all. At our initial visit we went through an exhaustive history of my mental illness, what treatments I have tried, what has worked, what hasn't. Then we went over my current situation. He considered all of this information, but, thank god, did not propose any radical departures. Instead, we discussed short term and long term goals and the risks associated with different medications and methods of treatment. By the end of the first visit I could tell that this was a doctor I could work with. He clearly explained the rationale behind his treatment and recommendations and assured me that he would not push a line of treatment that I didn't like or want to pursue. Unlike with so many of the psychiatrists that I've seen in the past, who like driving the bus but won't tell you where they are headed (because (1) they don't know themselves, and (2) they don't want you to know that they don't know--they have to maintain their authority over you so that you are compelled to come back to them if you want to continue treatment), Dr. Amiri was frank and honest and tells you what he's doing and why. At the same time, I never felt like he was a push over or that he gave into patient's unhealthy propensity's (which is the another, suboptimal way that psychiatrists have tried to keep me as a patient in the past). Dr. Amiri has the knowledge and skillset necessary to take the middle way, treating each individual with care and a concern for the whole health of his patients. I couldn't be happier with my decision to change doctors and I would highly and unconditionally recommend Dr. Amiri to anyone looking for a wiser method, one that aims at working WITH patients, instead of ON or AGAINST patients."
