"This is in reference to Akron Children’s orthopedics downtown location specifically: patients beware. I had an urgent care visit at the Boston Heights location after my daughter slipped and hurt her foot. The visit there was wonderful! She ended up with a broken toe that required a boot and follow up with ortho. I visited the downtown Akron Children’s orthopedic office location twice for follow up, and my daughter needed xrays both times. We never left the office, simply walked right down the hall of their office for xrays and back to our exam room. The bill comes and I am charged for xrays done in a hospital setting because apparently that is how the ortho office bills for their xrays. Of course my insurance covers hospital bills differently than OUTPATIENT bills. However, I was never “in the hospital” for xrays. I assumed these were outpatient xrays. They never warn you beforehand, I did not sign anything agreeing to this service and there are not signs posted in their office warning you. Had I know this was the case, I would have had xrays done at my primary care office for free. Akron Childrens billing department explained that the xray is rented out by the office and there is nothing that can be done about changing the billing. This is a huge disservice to their patients and I hope this post helps someone out before they become a victim to their billing scam. FWIW: I am an advanced practice provider and do medical billing every day in my job. So I am aware that how they are running things in that office is wrong. Patients should always have the option to receive a service wherever they wish, and not feel that they do not have a choice in the matter."
