I actually brought my car in once with a check engine light on and he guessed what it could be from my description, just to give me an idea. I authorized repairs if that was the problem, only for him to tell me later that the issue, once diagnosed, was something else. I saved HUNDREDS on that one visit alone (I think I paid under $100 that visit when I was expecting to pay over $300 for his initial guess).
