Somerville Kindergarten

Welcome to Somerville Kindergarten, located at 84A Clydesdale Avenue in Auckland, New Zealand. As an establishment and point of interest, we are dedicated to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for tamariki (children) to learn and grow.

At Somerville Kindergarten, we believe in embracing a bi-cultural curriculum that celebrates the uniqueness of each individual. We understand that every child brings with them a kete of knowledge, culture, and experiences. We strive to honor and recognize these diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging through our whanaungatanga (relationships) with tamariki and whānau (family).

Our approach is centered around manaakitanga (kindness) and aroha (love), as we aim to fill the emotional and social kete of our tamariki. By creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, we provide a home away from home where children can engage in meaningful play and authentic learning experiences.

As believers in the power of the environment, we have purposefully prepared our kindergarten to be a beautiful and secure space. We understand that the environment is the third teacher, and we are passionate about providing an environment that facilitates authentic play and exploration.

Our play-based kindergarten follows Te Whāriki (2017), an emergent curriculum that empowers tamariki and encourages them to immerse themselves in rich play experiences. By giving children autonomy over their play, they become creators and contributors in their own learning journeys.

We also strive to instill values of tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, working alongside tamariki to increase our proficiency in te reo Māori throughout the program. We support tamariki to become kaitiaki (leaders) of papatuānuku (earth) and develop sustainable practices.

Our skilled kaiako (teachers) implement the Incredible Years Teacher Programme, which supports young children with self-regulation and their social and emotional competence. We aim to provide a stimulating and challenging learning environment that inspires and supports children to respect and care for natural resources.

At Somerville Kindergarten, we view all children as competent and capable individuals. We offer exciting and well-resourced areas that provoke child-initiated learning and support sustained play.

Our kindergarten operates from Monday to Friday, from 8.30am to 2.45pm. Our office hours are from 8am to 4.45pm. Please note that we are closed during term breaks and public holidays.
