University Of Auckland Clock Tower
About the Business
Welcome to the University of Auckland Clock Tower, a historic institution located at Princes Street in Auckland, New Zealand. Formerly known as the Old Arts building, this iconic clock tower was designed by R.A. Lippincott, a Chicago-trained architect and brother-in-law of Walter Burley Griffin, the renowned designer of Canberra.
Standing tall at 54 meters, the Clock Tower is adorned with Mount Somers stone and draws inspiration from the famous Tom Tower of Christ Church, Oxford. It has become a symbol of the University and holds a special place in the hearts of both students and locals alike. Step inside and be captivated by the octagonal interior, featuring vaulted ceilings, galleries, a mosaic floor, and elegant piers.
Throughout its history, the Clock Tower has been home to various departments, including Arts, Architecture, Law, Music, and the University Library. It even housed the University Hall and provided limited student amenities until the Student Union Building was established in 1968.
In the years between 1985 and 1988, the main wing underwent an extensive renovation, strengthening, and cleaning process, restoring its original pristine whiteness that led to its popular nickname, "the wedding cake." This remarkable reconstruction earned the Clock Tower an esteemed award from the Institute of Architects.
Today, the Clock Tower is occupied by the Vice-Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor's Office, the Equity Office, parts of Academic Services, the Great Hall, and the Council Room. It serves as a hub of academic activity and administrative operations, representing the University's commitment to excellence.
As the University of Auckland's most iconic building, the Clock Tower is open to the public free of charge. Visitors can explore its historical significance and immerse themselves in its grandeur. To gain further insight into its architectural significance, we invite you to watch our video featuring interviews with Professor Errol Haarhoff and Dr. Julia Gatley from the School of Architecture and Planning at the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries. The film and music accompanying the video were created by talented students from the University of Auckland.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to the University of Auckland Library Special Collections for granting us access to valuable archive material, allowing us to preserve and share the rich history of the Clock Tower.
Come and experience the timeless beauty of the University of Auckland Clock Tower. Discover its significance, immerse yourself in its history, and embrace the spirit of knowledge and innovation that defines the University.

"Impressive building, however the seats in the lecture theatres are rather uncomfortable."
"Love this place. Reminds me of university years."
"Beautiful building in Auckland University campus."
"Beautiful building. I have one lecture there. The room is mostly hot but when we open all the doors and windows it gives good air flow and is fine. In some places it smells like the doctors which is strange but I'm sure is just cleaning chemicals."
"Beautiful Clock tower facing one entrance to Albert Park with a clock made of flowers and speakers corner"
