After completing his basic medical training, he became a member of the prestigious Royal College of Physicians (UK) and earned a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from Ireland.

Upon moving to New Zealand, Dr Okonji pursued specialized training in medical oncology in Wellington and Auckland. In 2015, he achieved the esteemed title of Fellow of the Australasian College of Physicians.

Driven by his passion for advancing medical knowledge, Dr Okonji embarked on a two-year research fellowship at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, focusing on breast cancer. His groundbreaking work led to the publication of several articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Following his time in London, Dr Okonji briefly served as a Consultant Medical Oncologist in New South Wales, New Zealand before returning to Wellington in 2018. He currently holds the position of Clinical Senior Lecturer at The University of Otago School of Medicine and actively participates in research as an investigator in clinical trials at Wellington Hospital.
