About the Business
Welcome to The Alfred, one of Australia's busiest hospitals, located at 55 Commercial Road in Melbourne. As a leading establishment in the healthcare industry, we provide specialized services and care for Victoria's most complex patients.
At The Alfred, we offer a range of specialized services that set us apart. We are proud to be home to Victoria's only heart and lung transplant service, providing life-saving procedures to those in need. Additionally, we house the Victorian Adults Burn Service, offering comprehensive care for burn victims, and the Victorian Melanoma Service, ensuring top-quality care for those affected by this serious skin cancer.
Patients come to The Alfred for a variety of specialty services. Our comprehensive cancer care program is highly regarded, providing patients with the best possible treatment options. We also specialize in respiratory medicine, cardiology, and cardiovascular services, ensuring that patients receive the highest level of care for these critical areas of health. Furthermore, we offer inpatient and community psychiatry care, catering to the mental health needs of our community.
Our dedication to providing exceptional care is evident in our success stories. Earlier this year, Hector Saenz became the second person in Australia to receive a lung transplant following COVID-19. After six months in our Intensive Care Unit, receiving over 4000 hours of critical care from 1500 medical professionals, and the longest recorded stint on ECMO, Hector's recovery is a testament to the expertise and commitment of our team.
In addition to our specialized services, we are proud to announce the funding boost for our Australian-first clinic dedicated to construction industry workers exposed to silica or diagnosed with silicosis. This deadly lung disease requires specialized care, and we are committed to providing it for at least another three years.
At The Alfred, we value community input and strive to provide inclusive and equitable healthcare. We encourage you to participate in the consultation process regarding future Alfred HIV services and share your views on the next steps.
If you are a medical, nursing, or allied health professional, we invite you to enroll in our new course on perioperative and acute-on-chronic pain management. This course provides an introductory overview of these important topics and is designed to enhance your knowledge and skills.
As an institution, we acknowledge and respect the people of the Kulin Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which we operate. We welcome individuals from all cultures, nationalities, and religions, and our commitment is to provide inclusive and equitable healthcare for all.
Thank you for choosing The Alfred. We are here to serve you and provide the highest standard of care for your health needs.

"I have been a patient of the Alfred for 4.5 years. During those years my health has withered progressively, even though I have been very active in my recovery. The problem is their professionals from the ID clinic are extremely mediocre. They don't even understand the language being used in all the research from their specific field. They are not using therapies used around the world nor even will accept recreating them even if they have a foreign country doctor's prescription for it. Nor they even provide with an alternative to help cope. When I have gone to the ER they don't do anything about my case and send me back saying that I'm an outpatient and should be seen as such because my case is chronic. But the team that should do that doesn't do anything either. I am just volleyballed by them. The dental team send me somewhere else who never finished my treatment. The gastrointestinal team suggested hypnotherapy, even though I have been on vagus nerve stimulation and it doesn't help. So clearly they don't understand even the science behind the process to suggest that when I was already doing something that does the same, but better. The social workers NEVER pick up the phone, nor they are able to help with ANYTHING. They are just simply useless. I trusted them when they took my case over and It's frankly appalling and preposterous to see such an institution be mediocre from every possible angle. When I tell the story to my doctor friends from around the world, they laugh at the level of mediocrity. Some of the doctors I know are from third world countries that have better Doctors and a better system. Now... I wonder... Is this an Australian thing? Or is it just the Alfred? Will have to wait and see."
"Dad was there for over a week getting so called tests done etc. not 1 doc rang us or returned my calls to let us know anything. I had to go in & wait for someone to come speak to us. They discharged him when he wasn’t eating well. Haven’t received any call regarding his treatment. Taken him to a different hospital & in the 2 days he has been there I have had a call everyday explaining what they want to do etc. GET IT TOGETHER ALFRED. Your system is broke."
"Such an amazing, accommodating, caring place. With such amazing people. I was here for 7 weeks after my motorbike accident. 2 in icu. 5 on the trauma ward. They arranged for my dog to come and see me in the courtyard. That's how much they care. ❤️❤️❤️❤️"
"The best hospital I've ever been to!!! I just wanted to say thank you to 7 WEST and all the nurses + the whole neurology team and the pharmacist. EVERY SINGLE PERSON was absolutely amazing, extremely professional, and gave me 200%. I felt listened to, respected, and for the first time ever - that I am in good hands and I can trust everyone. Everyone was very thorough and did their best to help me while I was not only very unwell but also under huge pressure and extremely stressed. My experience with doctors and hospitals was genuinely horrible (many places for many years) and you just changed everything for me and proved impossible. I will be back in the hospital quite a bit probably as we are still investigating things and I haven't recovered yet. But in the meantime, I simply wanted to say THANK YOU. I have never experienced such good care, in so many ways (and I've been in several hospitals in many countries around the world, including most in Brisbane and Sydney)."
"The best Hospital in Australia! (See Newsweek article best hospitals 2022) I am grateful for the speedy diagnosis of a rare condition in the ER. Quickly the appropriate treatment was started on the same day. You are in good hands here... I signed up for the online patient portal. No miss-communication or missed appointments here."
