East Tennessee Veterans Memorial

East Tennessee Veterans Memorial

Located in the heart of Knoxville, Tennessee, the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in military service. Nestled in the historic World’s Fair Park, this poignant memorial honors over 6,200 veterans from 35 counties across East Tennessee, a testament to the region's enduring legacy of courage and dedication.

The Memorial is composed of 32 stately granite pylons, each standing nine feet high. The names of the fallen are inscribed up to a height of 54 inches, ensuring accessibility for all visitors, including those in wheelchairs. Each pylon bears approximately 220 names, organized by conflict and county, with future space reserved for additional heroes. Among these names, the 14 Medal of Honor recipients from the region are specially commemorated.

Visitors are invited to reflect on the sacrifices made by these individuals while seated on granite benches positioned opposite each pylon. The Memorial's walkways and entrance plaza are also crafted from granite, featuring an American flag on a 50-foot pole that flies proudly day and night, illuminated by dedicated lighting.

A striking feature of the Memorial is the 27-foot high bell tower, inscribed with the Four Essential Freedoms as declared by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The bell, crafted by Petit and Fritsen Royal Bellfoundry in The Netherlands, rings out in a musical note of B, symbolizing the enduring spirit of freedom.

The names etched into the Memorial were meticulously researched by the University of Tennessee's Center for the Study of War and Society, ensuring accuracy and honor in their representation. New names continue to be added annually, reflecting the ongoing commitment to remembering those who serve.

The Memorial was brought to life through the vision of Knoxville businessman J. William “Bill” Felton III, inspired by the solemn beauty of American Military cemeteries in Normandy, France. With the support of local leaders and generous contributions from the community, the Memorial was dedicated on November 15, 2008, marking a permanent tribute to the region's heroes.

Visitors to the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial will find a place of reflection, honor, and gratitude, celebrating the lives and sacrifices of those who have served. "Tucked away in the corner of the park is this well designed touching memorial. At night, it feels warm, inviting, and emotional. The center monolith says it all."

"This is the memorial to honor 6316 fallen heroes from 35 counties of East Tennessee who laid their lives since World War I. This wonderful memorial is in the World’s Fair Park in Knoxville. There are 32 granite pylons on which the names of the fallen heroes are inscribed. On each pylon there are 220 names inscribed. A granite bench is placed opposite each pylon for seated observation and contemplation. There are granite walkways within the memorial. There is an American flag on the circular plaza. There is an information plaque which explains the history of the memorial. Check the back of the pylon to see the names of the recipients of the Medal of Honor. This is near the historic L & N Rail Road Station. This is the station from where thousands of young men boarded the trains to war and never returned. Whenever you are in Knoxville, visit this place in beautiful World’s Fair Park."
