"I've had a few occasions to stand before a judge in this court, one that I'm not particularly proud of. However in both instances, one with former judge and one with current, I was treated with more respect than I expected and more compassion than I thought I deserved at the time. Both charges came from a time when I was struggling in life, both physical and mental health as well as substance abuse stemming from an injury years before. When the court heard I was in treatment they were very positive and offered ACD while the second issue was something I had thought rectified years before when I had a case manage through my recovery but wasn't. The DA was very helpful and listened to me explain what sounded like a VERY B.S. situation and the judge was also compassionate. The clerk, who I had spoken to prior when trying to rectify things, went above and beyond her calling to try and assist me, event bringing up to the judge in court a really weird situation I was in regarding renewing my license when NYS can't provide me with a certified birth certificate. I know you hear a lot of bad when it comes to the criminal justice system, and there are a lot of negative stories; however, there are positive as well, or stories that are just sort of there that show the system is functioning and people are doing the best they can with the tools they have. I was not entitled to the care I received, especially when it looked like I was dodging a charge from 7 years before, and yet I was listened to and taken at face value. As someone who does have a checkered past that means a lot because I have grown and I'm glad that people are willing to look at more than just the stereotype."
