"Booked a load of warehouse racking out of salt lake, UT to Las Vegas, NV with Steve the broker on this load. Shipper was advance Storage products. The load required Tarping which was mentioned up front however steve did not want to compensate for having to tarp. What was not mentioned until multiple conversations had transpired was previous carriers also had the same concerns and issues with their tarps getting damaged. (project job = multiple loads shipped daily) Load paid $1150. I arrived to shipper 7am, weather is approx 40. Product had been sitting outside so it was cold and slippery while tarping. I have hauled a bunch of warehousing commodities and for the first time was asked to tarp steel racking, which I did not understand why considering the commodity and clear weather , apparently it’s customers request. In the process of tarping I called steve up to express my concerns with my tarps potentially getting ruined. Being the professional carrier instead of rejecting the load I decided to take the hual. We all know being small outfits we are always the ones to blame and suffer the most. As requested I tarped using all necessary equipment to protect from sharp edges. During transit my tarp got destroyed I called steve back up and asked him if he or the customer would be open to assisting on tarp repairs. Steve said he would talk to the customer but the odds of them helping were slim nor was he willing to step in and assist. After back and forth negotiating and pleading a case the answer was a flat out no we will not help with the tarp repair expenses. My fellow truckers 1)please don’t haul cheap freight, lesson learned, you will always lose and or hurt your fellow trucking comrads down the line by allowing cheap freight to be an ok standard. 2) value quality relationships, they are key to being successful in this industry, not quantity relationship$. Please keep that in mind when working with brokers. Long story short this hauled was designed for curtain trailers (for tarping requirements) and mega carriers like cr England (hual rate$). The unfortunate circumstances of my experience with this broker having a project haul with mass volume $$$ (carrier is most likely to call back for more loads) and not willing to invest in the relationship tells me this is a broker I will never do business with again."
