About the Business

Hope Ministries Thrift Store

Hope Ministries Thrift Store, located at 500 East Army Post Road in Des Moines, Iowa, is not just your typical thrift store. Revenue generated from purchases made at our store directly supports Hope Ministries' programs and services for individuals and families who are homeless, hungry, abused, or struggling with addiction. By shopping at our store or donating items to be sold, you are helping to provide food, shelter, and recovery services to those in need.

Our business hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with donation hours available during the same days from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. We are always looking for mission-minded individuals to join our retail and processing teams, so employment opportunities are available at both of our store locations.

Through our partnership program, Corners of Your Field, local churches can encourage their attendees to donate gently used household items to our store. In return, a portion of the value of these items is given back to the church in the form of gift cards to help those in need within their congregation.

Donations of furniture, clothing, household items, appliances, and more are accepted at our store locations. We ask that donations be clean and in good, usable condition. Items that are not able to be accepted are listed on our website along with our donation guidelines.

Some donations are distributed for free to individuals at our shelter or recovery facilities, while others are sold in our stores. Items such as cars, rare books, collectibles, and antiques are resold through partnerships to maximize the impact of your donation within our ministry. If you have items to donate but are unable to drop them off, we offer a pick-up service from your home or office.

By supporting Hope Ministries Thrift Store, you are not only finding great deals on quality items, but you are also making a difference in the lives of those in need in our community. Thank you for your support!

"They are having this women start stuff with me and they don't do nothing bout it. It not fair or right. Said we both have to go and she works there. I got a right to be happy and not mess with. Even the other girls saw and heard it. I just want to have my own place and to not freeze to death."

"Not the best thrift store in town. It smelled kind of funny the selection wasn't great in the prices were significantly higher than others."

"It’s sad how much management has changed things. Since taking over this summer, prices have doubled, even tripled. Dollar store items are priced over $1, sometimes up to $5… see photos. I can go down the street and buy jeans, coats, dresses for at least half the price… this was once a store with a mission to help those who couldn’t afford brand new things. Now they can’t even afford used items donated to Hope. Prior to the management takeover, I used to shop at least twice a week and spend a lot of money. The employees knew me. One older clerk knew I come in a lot but never said hi, always asked if I wanted to round up (all the clerks knew me and knew I always did… she asked every time), never smiles, etc…. Not sure why she’s there as her customer service stinks. I only go once a month now, hoping that something changes, but I’m not hopeful. I’ve messaged, tried to convey my concerns, but they never reply. There are much better thrift stores.. DAV, SVDP and Animal lifeline…."
