Auglaize Village, located at 12296 Krouse Road in Defiance, Ohio, is a museum and tourist attraction founded in 1966 by the Defiance County Historical Society. The village consists of a collection of restored buildings from the 1800s, showcasing rural life in northwest Ohio during that time period.
Originally gifted 40 acres and a red barn by the Mansfield Family, the village has since expanded to include an additional 80 acres. In 1975, the Society turned over the museum complex to the people of Defiance, allowing the County Commissioners to secure grants and assistance for its preservation.
Visitors to Auglaize Village can explore 22 new or restored buildings, including four farm museums, a military museum, a natural history museum, and a model railroad museum. The Mansfield Museum, housed in the original red barn, offers a glimpse into the village's history.
Meetings are held at the village on the 1st Thursday of each month at 7PM, and all are welcome to attend. "Today was the settlers' encampment. There are various folk around crafting and living like they did in the old days. There were quite a few people, a gunsmith, a guy who taught children to start fires, a bee guy, and some horses. That was not all that was there, I'm just bad at remembering, but it's all I can easily recall. Anyway, there was food as well, didn't look at that really, and a free train ride, again we sort of work here and skipped this as well. As I understand tomorrow, there will be more folk and possibly food vendors."
"What a wonderful living history place! So much to see and experience, and if you pick an "event" weekend to visit, you'll be immersed in a whole lot more! It's mostly handicap accessible, and you'll need about 2 hours. Enjoy!"
