About the Business

Fort Ord Dunes State Park

Fort Ord Dunes State Park, located in Marina, California, United States, is a popular tourist attraction opened to the public in 2009. Covering nearly 1,000 acres of public land, the park offers 4 miles of ocean beach with stunning views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Visitors can explore the dunes and beaches, home to many endangered species, while staying on designated trails to protect the sensitive habitats. Dogs are allowed on the recreation trail that runs through the park, but not on spur trails to the beach or on the beach itself.

At the main parking area, visitors can learn about the former Fort Ord US Army Base and the natural history of the park through educational panels. Additionally, a mobile phone audio tour is available for those interested in the cultural and natural features of Fort Ord. Public access is limited to designated roads and trails open to bicyclists, hikers, and dogs on leash.

There is no campground at the park, but visitors can enjoy the Marine Protected Areas Coloring Book to learn about the diverse plant and animal life in California's MPAs. The book includes 3D augmented reality coloring pages for an interactive learning experience. For more information and to download the coloring book and California Coastal Explorer Guide, visit the website.

Please note that Monterey Peninsula weather can be changeable, so layered clothing is advised. For more information or directions, contact the Monterey District Headquarters Front Office at (831) 649-2836. Thank you for helping to preserve the natural beauty and wildlife at Fort Ord Dunes State Park.

"The beach line to the ocean is steep and the waves are intense. We did not let our kids close to the water at all. With that said, it’s a beautiful quarter mile to the beach, gorgeous views. Our kids like climbing the dunes. The succulents were colorful and rich with texture painting the landscapes rolls and paths."

"Rough walk to the surf/beach. The beach is steep but beautiful. You can see whales, otters, and dolphins at times."

"So we went back a second time and we grew to appreciate it more. The kids had a blast running up and down the sand dunes and you get an amazing view of the bay. Not a place to swim but a fun place to play in the sand and soak up some awesome Ocean waves."

"Visited the week of 9/25/23. 1st time back in 45 years. The dunes themselves are nice to see. There are 2 port-a-pots in the parking lot. The views are spectacular and the waves were rolling in gently. Deducted one star for people who bring their doggies to the beach and don't pick up after them. Other than dodging those "landmines" it's worth a visit and reminiscing (if you ever were stationed at Ft. Ord)."
