About the Business

Fort Ord National Monument

The Fort Ord National Monument, located in Marina, California, is a park and tourist attraction with a rich history, diverse habitat, and bountiful recreation opportunities. With over 86 miles of trails, visitors can hike, bike, or ride horses through rolling hills, chaparral, and oak woodlands. The area is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, including streamside corridors, grasslands, and oak woodlands.

The monument holds significance as a former U.S. Army facility from 1917-1994, serving as a major training center and deployment staging ground during the Vietnam War. Today, it remains undeveloped, offering a glimpse into the heroism and dedication of the men and women who served our nation.

Visitors are encouraged to follow posted restrictions, including keeping animals on a leash, staying on authorized trails, and not using metal detectors or removing artifacts. Partnerships with organizations like the Watershed Institute and the U.S. Army's Fort Ord Base Realignment and Closure Team help improve the health of the land and recreational experience.

Whether exploring archaeological sites of Native Americans, following the Historic Trail of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza, or learning about the ranching families of the 1800s, a journey through the Fort Ord National Monument is a journey across land and time.

"Very clear paths; the shortest circular route is about 6 miles / 10k. It is just stunning. So quiet. Parking for free; toilets at parking area"

"My friends and I did the hike to the top of the Badger hiking trail within Fort Ord National Monument, it offered beautiful views of the Salinas Valley, the trail is steep in areas, make sure to wear proper shoes and stay hydrated. There is a free parking lot at the base of the trail and a restroom. Hikers we encountered on the trail were very friendly and people tend to stay on the marked trails."

"We were not hikers, but did make a trip out to see the entrance. Pretty area. Husband did basic training and AIT at Fort Ord in 1975."

"Great place to hike! Variety of trail options, from flatter, to challenging! We usually hike the 6 mile loop. Great for bicycles, horses or dogs with many off-leash portions. Fun to watch the goats mow down the hills' overgrowth in the fall."
