"I can't tell you how many hours I spent wandering the stores and trying on dresses to wear to my son's wedding at the St. Regis Hotel in Princeville, Kauai. Depressing is the best word to describe that experience. Then, I remembered that my sister-in-law had had an exquisite gown designed and made for her son's wedding. I could make a dress! I had two gorgeous pieces of fabric I had purchased years before just waiting for the moment of inspiration. Here it was! I studied Vogue patterns and nothing seemed just right. The patterns would have looked terrific on me about 30 years ago and 50 pounds lighter. My patience and sewing skills weren't up to the task, so I started looking online for dressmakers who could design gowns for weddings. I discovered Debra. At our first meeting I brought my 2 fabrics. I had ideas, and Debra listened. She had suggestions that I would never have ever considered. How about extra gathering in the back giving it a very full look? That is usually an area I try not to emphasize; it is already large enough. But she was so right. At our second meeting I brought copies of dresses I had seen online. One dress had perfect shoulders, another had lovely straps. Somehow Debra put this altogether. A little from one dress, a little from another, and finally she designed a pattern just for me. It was just right. As the gown came together Debra's designing really became apparent. The good was emphasized and the bad was hidden! Yay! I grew more and more excited and she did too. She takes great joy in her work and was as happy with the gown as I was. Wedding day finally arrived and the sun was shining. I felt absolutely beautiful! I had so many compliments, even from strangers walking by in the hotel. One sister sent me an email saying, "Don't you know you're not supposed to upstage the bride," followed with a happy face. The bride looked stunningly gorgeous, and I as her new mother-in-law felt beautiful too. This gown was such a glowing success that Debra turned the second piece of fabric into another gown for the reception that was held back here on the mainland about two weeks later. We went through the same process, and she designed something very different but also exquisite. My younger son made me promise to wear the first dress at his wedding, but now I had a second gown that was, if possible, more beautiful than the first. I wore something else to the reception, and I'm saving the second gown to be worn for the first time to his wedding! I have Debra. Now, he just needs to find someone to fall in love with!"
