About the Business

Sanford Historic Preservation Board

The Sanford Historic Preservation Board, located at 300 North Park Avenue in Sanford, Florida, is a local government office dedicated to preserving the city's buildings, structures, sites, and districts. The program aims to raise awareness of Sanford's cultural and architectural heritage while working with other City departments and community partners to create a more sustainable and livable city.

The institution encourages the preservation of historical buildings, which not only safeguard our history but also contribute to a more sustainable environment. Older buildings support affordable housing, small businesses, and arts organizations, while maintaining the character and culture of the city's neighborhoods.

The Historic Preservation Board oversees the Downtown Commercial Historic District, Sanford Residential Historic District, and the Georgetown Historic District, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Various architectural styles can be found in these districts, telling Sanford's stories through homes, churches, schools, and other buildings.

To ensure the preservation of historic structures, the institution enforces standards for rehabilitation and new construction in the local districts through Schedule S of the Land Development Regulations. Any exterior work on a Historic Landmark or property in designated historic districts requires a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) before commencement.

The Historic Preservation Board consists of seven members who meet monthly to oversee the historic districts and promote the city's cultural heritage. The institution aims to encourage new development that harmonizes with existing historic areas.

Due to operational challenges in the City of Sanford's Reclaimed Water System, public access to quality reclaimed water is limited. Operating hours are restricted, with reclaimed water available for irrigation from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am on scheduled days. Customers may experience low pressure due to high demand and low supply.

"If I could leave zero stars I would. I am beyond livid with this worthless "historical preservation" nonsense. They will come around your house demanding that you follow their guidelines and rules but do absolutely nothing to help keep your home, property, or neighborhood safe. I have lived in my house for over 3 years and everything I have tried to protect my home and property "within their guidelines" has done absolutely no good. It has been a complete waste if time and money. I tried to enclose my carport to keep my things from being rifled through, stolen, and trespassed upon and within a couple of days I was made to take it down. I was told only a "white picket fence" was within guidelines. We put a white picket fence around Our whole property as well as motion sensor lights and beware of dog signs...has it stopped the theft and trespassing? No. Not at all. The homeless and migrant population is rampant at all hours of the day and night. Everything that is not locked down is fair game. Our cars have been broken into, decorative plants stolen from our yard and literally anything that is not nailed down. I don't recommend moving into this area until the city does a better job protecting it or the the historic preservation society allows you to protect your property on your own. Because folks....no matter how old, expensive, or beautiful the houses are...they are NOT a HOME unless you feel SAFE."
