"I lived in a highland historic properties apartment for a year and a half. I previously rented a unit with Metcalf realty that was a nightmare situation. Within 2-3 weeks of contacting HHP needing pretty immediate rental I signed a lease and moved in. The owner Steve and manager Pam are so kind, easy to get in touch with, and accommodating. It feels like renting from a smaller family owned company, not like H2 and other rental companies in Birmingham. The maintenance staff was responsive and typically fixed any problems within 24 hours of submitting a request. As the name suggests all of their properties are historic so I did deal with some a/c problems in the summer and high utility bills, but that's something to anticipate if you choose to live in an older home especially somewhere as hot as Birmingham is. Overall renting from HHP was a positive experience and I have recommended them to several friends in the area."

"I have been living in the Highland Apt Communities for almost a year now. I absolutely love my apartment. It has so much charm and character and I feel so at home. Because it is such an old building there are some things that need constant maintenance but Mia and Jay have been great. They always respond promptly to any issues that I have and work around my crazy schedule. They are also very accommodating when it comes to my dog. They know she is super anxious baby and they always go out of their way to make sure she is taken care of and feeling safe before they allow anyone into my apartment to do repairs or whatnot."

"I love my little apartment at the Phares! It’s been such a great experience living here. Mia is the best! She is super responsive, and handles any question or concerns I have. Jay(maintenance) is amazing as well! Any work order I have ever put in has been handled within 24 hours. So happy I’ve decided to call this apartment home."

"My husband and I have lived at the Highlands Apartment and Communities for nearly 6 years, and absolutely love it! Out of all the places I've lived in my life, this is by far my favorite! The building is exactly our cup of tea, with the character of the 1920s, high ceilings, and beautiful windows. The wood floors add to the ambiance, along with the huge porch, overlooking Highland Avenue. I enjoy the galley kitchen and have more than sufficient room to cook. The management and staff are unbeatable, addressing any issue promptly, always accessible, and going the extra mile. The area, with the historic downtown garden district, encompassing three parks, is perfect for walking or running. Everyone is super friendly and seems to be happy, while out and about at restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. I feel like I'm living the International House Hunters experience in my own nation, in historic downtown Birmingham. Robin Kirby-Gatto"

"DO NOT LIVE HERE. This photo pretty much sums up my time at this place. I would not recommend this place to anyone. First, my kitchen flooded several times. Maintenance attempted to fix the problem, but essentially told me there was a problem with the pipes and not much could be done. Then, my bathroom proceeded to flood. Several times. Again, maintenance could not pinpoint the problem and essentially put a bandaid on it. Additionally, parking is horrible. You will have to park on an ill lit, dead-end street that oftentimes has homeless people loitering about. Sometimes I can't even get out of my car before a homeless person is at my window asking me something. Oh and do you like central heating and A/C? Don't live here then. The "heat" that is advertised is essentially a space heater attached to your wall. In one room. Every other room is freezing in the winter. Don't worry, though. You'll be sweating in the summer as the window A/C units do nothing to cool down this poorly insulated building. The maintenance issues were not the most unpleasant part of this place, however. I was broken into here. The man attempted to get in my apartment via the A/C window unit. When I alerted management about this, they promised they would put window guards over all my A/C units as well as alarms on the windows. This never happened, of course. Any extra security measures put in place were on my dime, and will be leaving with me when I move out. In fact, management has only worsened the problem of safety around the complex by leaving things like this toilet around, failing to trim back the trees/brush so that anyone can hide in the back area of the complex, etc. I feel completely unsafe here as a woman living alone and all of my requests have been simply ignored by management. I have lived in some bad places, but this has by far been the worst and it's largely due to the management. Do not live here."
