"My family and I moved in to Ravenswood this past May. The hardwood floors were brand new, which was nice. However, after we moved ourselves in and finally went to sleep, we woke up to dead roaches in the dining room and hallway—we believe our cat may have killed them. We had JUST moved in. I have a deep-seeded, primal fear of roaches, so we slept with all of the lights on for the first two weeks of living there! The maintenance did have a pest control company come right out and spray the next day, which was appreciated. But the roaches just keep coming back! My husband and I have had to take matters into our own hands—using boric acid and spraying our own roach killer that we bought ourselves. We keep the apartment clean and we don’t leave food out, and these roaches are the American cockroach variety and typically infest due to conditions in a boiler room (which apparently is no longer in use since there is central heat and air) or other moisture/plumbing problems. Now, we know this is an older building and these things happen from time to time. But there clearly isn’t enough being done, here. We do live on the bottom floor, so perhaps we’re seeing more in our unit and hallway than the other tenants, but I also know that we’re not alone in our complaints. We have children, one of whom has severe allergies and asthma—conditions that cockroach infestations definitely exacerbate. There are also giant roaches that have totally taken over the laundry room, which is where tenant storage is for our building. Word to the wise: don’t store anything in those storage units unless you’d like to have roach-infested Christmas decorations! Pros: awesome a/c, ceiling fans in every room, new floors, responsive maintenance, friendly neighbors, good neighborhood, pets allowed."
