Old Castle Restaurant 3830 Sun City Center Boulevard, Ruskin, FL 33573

"Solid German food with a distinct flair. We started with the Flammkuchen and a medium pretzel with Dragons Breath dip, both were divine. Very delicious and the Dragons Breath dip was hotter than we were expecting but delectable nonetheless. The Flammkuchen was different than what we have had previously as it was served on flatbread, but it still tasted great, and they certainly did not skimp on the bacon! I had the Rinsroulade (roasted and rolled beef stuffed with bacon, onions, mustard, and pickles), and the only criticism is that the meat was tough, it was definitely not braised long enough but the flavor was on point. As my sides I had Apfel Rotkohl (red cabbage cooked with apples) which was the highlight of the meal, I had never had this with such a depth of flavor. As my other side I had Bratkartoffeln (Pan-fried potatoes with bacon and onions). These were good but did not seem to be pan-fried but deep fried, different flavor and texture than the traditional German fare but good overall. My wife had the Black Forest Schnitzel with the Apfel Rotkohl and spätzle. She loved the Schnitzel and the Rotkohl but thought the spätzle was a tad bland. Our son had the Schweinshax’n (Oven roasted pork shank) with sauerkraut and spätzle. He loved the pork shank that was fall off the bone tender, and like the sauerkraut and the spätzle but after trying our rotkohl he thought that it was superior to the sauerkraut. All in all, a very good meal with great service and a nice atmosphere. We arrived too early for the music but will have to experience that at a later point."

"This restaurant was a really nice surprise, as soon as we walked in for a Sunday dinner. We had live entertainment, a man and his squeeze box. Dinner was great and so was our server. The ambiance was really nice. Really enjoyed Thank you."

"Stopped here on a whim after picking up a peloton bike. Go figure. Good thing because I ate everything on the plate. Good was delicious and definitely authentic. We got a medium pretzel which I wouldn’t get again but the schnitzel and späetzle was really good! Will definitely come here again."

"Atmosphere was great loved the live music and authentic German decor. Service was great! Food was less than desirable. The Spatzel was either to mushy or hard as a rock and gun bacon they put in it was even harder so hard I thought I was eating some type of pit or bone. The sausage was lacking flavor as did the Gravy. My husband snitzel was better. Need better turn over on food and a chef that cares about the quality of food his menu. Otherwise it would have been very pleasant the poor quality food was a bummer as I needed a taste of home today. The beer was good"

"Great German experience!! The portions were nice and the food was delicious!! We had several offerings, including appetizers and main dishes- see photos. The food was coursed properly and our waitress was GREAT!! The wine and beer were reasonably priced *i wish they had more German offerings- especially in the red wine category. The ambiance was nice- the live music man was entertaining and I loved that in between sets he came around and chatted with guests. Such a nice touch! The male bartender was moody, short with interactions, and generally didn’t want to be bothered. He was the biggest downer of the night. Overall 4 stars. A friendlier bartender and more German wine would take this to a 5 for me! =)"
