"Personal experience with this special person, the best human being, a great sister, works at this center her name is Tricia McClusky! Beautiful heart, lord knows y'all have the best!"
"There were some parts I did not like there I was 13 years old and with someone who has had a bad experience with me cousin doing inappropriate things to me I would say they should separate boys and girls on separate wards also I don't think it is ok for the 5-6 year olds with the teens. Also I don't think it is ok that they keep your items that you need for your menstrual cycle in the ward so then when your in the school room the morning staff during the week I had would not let them go back to the ward so I could get the stuff I needed. The evening staff where genuinely understand and were always willing to listen to me say what I have to say and there were a few staff whu would genuinely help me and I could tell that they cared about me"
"this place is nothing less than a prison. the staff not only doesn’t care about your problems but they also make fun of them with other patients and coworkers. i was here for 13 days and i personally think it made me worse than before i was in there. the nurse leslie is incredibly rude to everyone there including the staff. the food was okay, i enjoyed the chicken tenders. but they group you with people of much different age groups and problems. i personally think it isn’t right for a 16-17 year old to spend every day with 5-6 year olds who haven’t even matured yet. overall i found this place to be highly traumatizing and i would not recommend at all."
"Was a horrible place for me. Was sent there from albany County when I was a teenager. They favor the girls that are there unfortunately for months at a time a few girls had been there for years due to either their family giving up or them being in the system and having no family. The therapist don't spend enough time working your ISSUES out and ur lucky if the Dr will even listen to u about meds. My mother is a professional psychic Dr and she almost had to sue them due to over medicating me and almost causing me a heart attack at qge 17. They wouldn't release me after being there for a few months and was stable back to my family but looked for agencies to take me. My family even brought the center to court. It was like I was kidnapped by the facility. Eventually I was released due to aging out and instead of again to my family they sent me to another adult mental health facility. And they seem to think restraining kids is the answer and then when the kids are disrespect towards them they make up lies and keep their family away from them and cause issues and then put them in jail when they're supposed to be being treated for mental health. I feel bad for any kid that has to endure this place."
"I went to Mohawk Valley in 2016 due to suicidal ideation and double depression that wasn't getting better. I promised my NP that I would go to the hospital it these thoughts recurred, and when they did, I went. It was the first place that would take me after 3 days waiting at my local hospital, and I stay there for 2 weeks, which seemed to be the minimum. Some of the people in my ward had been there for months. My first experience upon entering the building was the sounds of one girl screaming and sobbing, a great start. That night, I spent two hours crying in the hallway, and none of the staff seemed to care. I got more sympathy from the girls in my ward the next day, as I had naturally kept them up with my wailing. Pencils weren't allowed, because 7 years prior a patient had stabbed a staff member in the face. Pens were allowed, so it seemed like a strange rule. Peer pressure seemed to be a tactic they used to discipline the entire ward, punishing everyone if one patient broke a rule. These rules could range from stealing dining utensils, which I understand, to *taking too long in the bathroom*, which seems unreasonable. One patient who didn't bend to peer pressure would often result in the punishment of the entire ward. There was apparently a psychiatrist and ward manager who was supposed to speak to the patients once a week. None of the patients even knew this, even those who had stayed for months. There was mold in the showers. Despite my ward housing exclusively females aged 13-18, the ward didn't supply feminine hygiene products, and would have to take them from another patient with their permission. A lack of supervision meant some patients would steal others' clothing in the morning. I watched a 13 year old, clearly disturbed girl get tackled and pinned down by 5 full grown adults and injected with 3 tranquilizers. There were very, very few opportunities to be away from the other patients for a moment of solitude. Not away from staff, I understand the refusal to let patients out of staff sight. Other patients. The soft room was the only real opportunity, as our bedrooms were off limits during the day, and if someone was already in there, there was no other reprieve. My school never provided my coursework to the hospital, and as such, during class times I wasn't able to do anything. They repeatedly put a patient with extreme abandonment issues and separation anxiety with a roommate, all of whom would leave long before her, making her issues worse. The thermometer repeatedly said I was suffering from extreme hypothermia. Naturally, I was not. One staff member seemed eager to provoke the patients. I was once yelled at for trying to give a girl a picture because she was laying down for the night. I had instead offered to give it to the nurse, this patient requiring 24/7 supervision and so being watched while she slept, and got yelled at. The best thing I can say about this experience is that after my 2 weeks there, I was so happy to leave my mood had improved greatly. I do not think being the greater of two evils should be treated as an effective treatment."
