Once the home of the Royalls, the largest slaveholding family in the state, and at least sixty enslaved individuals, the museum stands as one of the few remaining freestanding quarters in the North where enslaved people lived and worked. Our mission is to honor the lives of those who were enslaved and to explore the resistance and activism of both enslaved and free Black people in the eighteenth century. Through our exhibits and programs, we are dedicated to telling the history of slavery and freedom and highlighting the enduring legacy of enslavement that perpetuates systemic inequalities today.
