Kiah House Museum
Kiah House Museum, located at 505 West 36th Street in Savannah, Georgia, was once the residence of Dr. Calvin L. Kiah and Virginia Kiah. Dr. Kiah was a professor at Savannah State College, while Virginia was a teacher, artist, and curator. Together, they established one of the first museums in Savannah run by African Americans in 1959. The museum welcomed notable visitors such as Rosa Parks and Margaret Burroughs. Originally a Prairie style home, Virginia Kiah added a two-story front addition with a wall of windows to accommodate the museum. Unfortunately, the museum closed after Virginia's passing in 2001. The house, excluded from its historic district due to alterations, fell into disrepair over the years.
Battery Hambright
Battery Hambright is a historic military site located at Fort Pulaski National Monument in Tybee Island, Georgia, United States. This Endicott-era battery was constructed in 1899 and completed in 1901, named after officer Horace Hambright. Although guns were never installed, the battery was designed to hold two 3" guns for coastal defense. Situated a tenth of a mile down the North Pier Trail, Battery Hambright offers a glimpse into the military history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The battery was camouflaged by a thick wall of earth for protection from incoming artillery rounds.
