The 11,700-square-foot house boasts stucco walls, leaded-glass windows, brick chimneys, and ornate details throughout. The interior showcases oak paneling, intricate woodwork, and decorative plasterwork, reflecting traditional English design. The estate's landscape, designed by landscape architects Florence Yoch, Lucile Council, and Katherine Bashford, includes expansive lawns, a motor court, a terrace, and a reflecting pool with a rose garden. The property was once owned by Colonel J.G. Boswell and Ruth Chandler Williamson, daughter of Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler. The current owner has restored the estate and preserved its historic features through a Conservancy easement. In 2018, the National Trust for Historic Preservation acquired Thornton Gardens, with plans for future co-stewardship with The Huntington.
