"George Medford is my 4x great grandfather. I was overwhelmed when I visited the Fort. I stayed quite a while trying to in vision what their life must have been like. I can’t imagine how determined my 4x great grandmother must have been to be willing to float her family down the river and build a home in this wilderness. My 3x great grandfather was their first born. He also must have had a lot of responsibility to help the family survive. Thank you for preserving my family’s history."
"I really enjoyed Old Washington! Founded back in the late 1700's and still standing! Lots of nice little shops!"
"Just visited May 2022 Was awesome walking on the same floor as Meffords walked in the 1700"s. Was emotional for me! I want to go back! I felt like since i was a Mefford that i should have not been charged, But i know the money goes for maintenance ."
"We got a private tour of the cabin as Earl is an 8th generation descendent of George Mefford, founder of Maysville. We learned there that the Meffords were part of the underground railroad, receiving runaway slaves from the Quakers and transporting them late at night over the Ohio River by flatboat to freedom in Ohio, after harboring them from the slave trackers and theur dogs. We are proud that our family was part of this movement."
"This is located at a small park at the edge of the historic town of Old Washington, Kentucky. We were there on a Sunday afternoon and so were unable to go in the house. It was a nice extra stop after seeing all of the other historic buildings in the town."
