About the Business

Welcome to Washington Park Cemetery
Located at 4650 James S. McDonnell Boulevard in Berkeley, Missouri, Washington Park Cemetery stands as a historic testament to African American heritage and culture. Celebrating its 100th year, this cemetery is a significant cultural landmark in the southern precinct of the city, near the corner of Natural Bridge Road and James S. McDonnell Blvd, just east of Lambert International Airport.
Despite its historical significance, Washington Park Cemetery faces challenges with nearly 30 acres of its 42-acre expanse in need of restoration. Our mission is to transform this site into a cherished north county heritage site, requiring dedicated efforts to maintain the cleared 25 acres.
Washington Park Cemetery is more than a resting place; it is a beacon of Heritage, Culture, and Ancestry. Our commitment extends beyond honoring the past; we aim to equip the next generation with transferable, living wage skills and a profound understanding of local heritage. Through hands-on experience in Preservation, Landscaping, Tree and Road Services, and more, youth and young adults gain practical skills and a deeper connection to their ancestry.
In a time of political and social change, healing from past wounds is essential for the progress of St. Louis. The historical trauma experienced by communities due to race, creed, and ethnicity impacts descendants today, manifesting in mental and physical health challenges, substance abuse, and weakened community structures. Addressing these ongoing issues requires acknowledging the past and fostering a sense of belonging and healing.
At Washington Park Cemetery, we strive to remind individuals of their origins and the inherited gifts from their ancestors. This connection to ancestry serves as a powerful tool for healing, offering guidance and support in daily life. By embracing our birthrights and ancestral lineage, we can break the cycles of trauma and move forward with strength and unity.
Join us at Washington Park Cemetery as we honor the past, empower the present, and pave the way for a brighter future.
Reviews
"My grandmother is buried there, she passed away in 1988 before it went under. Unfortunately she didn't have tombstone, only a big wooden cross as her marker. RIP Catherine Shamlin. Totally baffled that nobody in the city had enough money or concern to tak care of the place better. The City of Berkeley has it now and the place still abandoned."
"I remember hearing the story years ago about how the resting place of so many ppls family members were being neglected, disturbed and destroyed. It was heart breaking. Now I'm doing my ancestry and found out my great great grandmother and likely my great great great grandmother were buried there. Its a lot more personal now. The history of how this black cemetery was done was just horrible. I would like to volunteer to help when I can. If anybody knows of any volunteer opportunities for this cemetery please email me: Honeybee . deee 84 @ gmail .com"
"Visitor in area and I was baffled why only part of this cemetery is mowed. Read other reviews and now know why but still don’t understand it."
"I see alot of people complaining about the condition of this historical black cemetery but few do anything about it. Funny thing is they do have a volunteer group that are set up specifically for this cemetery as well as volunteers that cut the grass here out of thier own pocket. Funny thing is almost all of the volunteers are white people. You would think there would be a larger presence of the people that make up the cemetery but sadly this is not true."
"1983 ~10 year old Jane Doe found headless in basement of 5635 CLEMENS Ave. That precious child, still unidentified, is buried somewhere in Washington Park Cemetery. A small donated stone reportedly says "....Saddened hearts were healed... pain of life is over ...". Has anyone seen this grave or know where to find it?"
