About the Business

The Columns

The Columns, located on South 9th Street in Columbia, Missouri, are a beloved tourist attraction and symbol of strength and history. These six Ionic-style columns were originally part of Mizzou's first campus building, Academic Hall, which was destroyed by fire in 1892. Now, the Columns stand as a reminder of our shared past and a gathering place for students, faculty, and visitors alike. Whether you're relaxing with a book on a sunny day or capturing memories with graduation photos, the Columns offer a sense of home and tradition. They also serve as a backdrop for important events like Tiger Walk and proudly display our core values banners. Come see the Columns for yourself and experience the sense of community and history that they represent.

"This is a great site that you can visit for free anytime. Enjoy the spring flowers at the main drive entry, or grab the botanical gardens map and take a self guided tour. Be sure to research the history of the columns before you arrive."

"Located on the campus of The University of Missouri at Columbia. Academic Hall was constructed in 1840-1843 as the first building of the University of Missouri and the first public university building west of the Mississippi River. Such a beautiful campus with so much historical value. The columns specifically as the remaining pillars to the original universary academic hall. Visit thomas jeffersons original headstone there in the same quadrangle."
