Welcome to the Federal Public Defender's Office for the Northern & Southern Districts of Iowa, located at 101 West 2nd Street, Davenport, Iowa 52801. Established in 1993, our office is dedicated to upholding the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees the right to the assistance of counsel for individuals accused in criminal cases. We provide legal representation to those charged in federal court who cannot afford to hire an attorney.

Our office, part of a network that includes locations in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, and Davenport, is staffed by a committed team of 35 professionals, including 14 assistant federal defenders. Under the leadership of Federal Defender Brad Hansen, appointed on February 1, 2021, our team is equipped to handle a wide array of federal charges, with common cases involving drugs, firearms, fraud, and child pornography.

The Federal Public Defender is appointed for a four-year term by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, a process that ensures the highest standards of legal defense for our clients. Our office has a rich history, with previous leaders including Paul A. Zoss, Paul Papak, Nicholas Drees, and James Whalen, who have each contributed to the strong foundation of our services.
