In 1973, fishing legend Tom Mann, founder of Mann’s Bait Company, caught a 1-pound bass with his innovative strawberry Jelly Worm in Lake Eufaula. This bass, named Leroy Brown after the popular Jim Croce song, quickly became known for his bold personality, forcing even larger fish to avoid him. Leroy found a home in a 38,000-gallon aquarium at Tom Mann’s Fish World, where he famously swatted lures with his tail, never again taking the bait.

Leroy Brown's story captured the imagination of people worldwide, with tales of his exploits reaching as far as Germany, Zimbabwe, and Australia. When he passed away in 1980, the state of Alabama mourned. His memorial service drew hundreds, including tributes from country music stars and a performance by the Eufaula High School band.

Today, Leroy Brown rests in a permanent home in downtown Eufaula, marked by a marble tombstone and memorial statue. Engraved with the words “Most bass are just fish but Leroy Brown was something special,” this site honors the legacy of a fish that became a legend.
