Welcome to the Shelter Cove Volunteer Fire Department, proudly serving the vibrant community of Shelter Cove and the scenic Lost Coast. Located at 9126 Shelter Cove Road, Whitethorn, California, we are committed to providing exceptional fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to Humboldt County’s Lost Coast. Operated under the Resort Improvement District No. 1, our all-risk volunteer fire department covers a vast 49-square-mile district that includes approximately 700 homes, nine hotel/motels, two public beaches, and the Shelter Cove Airport.

Our dedicated team responds to around 200 calls annually, addressing fires, medical emergencies, rescues, and hazardous material incidents. Equipped with four fire engines, one ambulance, two ATV rescue units, and three ocean rescue units, we are prepared to handle a wide range of emergencies. We also play a crucial role in maintaining one of Southern Humboldt’s only fully hydranted communities, with 235 fire hydrants and two million gallons of stored water.

Resort Improvement District No. 1 also provides reliable electric, water, and wastewater utility services, fire protection, emergency medical services, and manages greenbelt and public recreation within Shelter Cove. Together, we are committed to the well-being and safety of our cherished community.
