"My son and I hiked this trail today, 07/21/2023. We hiked from both the southern trailhead and the northern trailhead. The reason we hiked from both ends is because we had difficulty establishing a connection between the two points. If you start from the southern trailhead, (which by the way has a duplicate incorrect placement here on Google Maps, which I've suggested an edit about) you will leave from a decently-sized gravel parking area which features a map of the marine protected area, but does not show the trail you are about to walk on. In fact the area itself does not have a sign anywhere indicating that you are in fact at the southern trailhead, save for a small California Coastal Trail insignia toward the bottom of on the wooden posts. You'll continue on a reasonably flat trail that splits here and there. One of the paths will take you very close to the cliff's edge, where it is quite dangerous. Ultimately, whichever path you choose will lead you to a sandy beach area covered in driftwood. Further along that beach area you will find a separate body of water inhabited by many water birds called Arroyo De La Laguna. At this point my son and I were trying to figure out where the trail continued, so we circled around the lagoon and under a tree. Just beyond the tree we saw soft dirt on the side of a steep hill that was densely covered in various plants. We wondered if this was where the trail continued, so we began to climb. This was very difficult. The dirt was so soft that we kept sliding down. We climbed to the top of the hill, and after catching our breath, we saw what appeared to be a trail, but was extremely overgrown. We tried to walk through it, but it was too dense and the bushes were prickly. Our legs were getting destroyed. At a certain it was too much, and the "trail" became indiscernible from any space between plants. We decided to go back to the car and drive to the northern trailhead. Overall, we had a great time on southern trailhead, but with the condition of trail beyond the lagoon, I'd say you're better off just turning around from that point."
