About the Business
Welcome to Franklin Mountain Hawkwatch, a serene park dedicated to preserving our environment and connecting people with nature in Oneonta, New York. Established in 1968 and a proud chapter of the National Audubon Society since 1970, we are committed to safeguarding birds and wildlife while fostering a deep appreciation for the natural world.
Located at Grange Hall Road Spur, our park is a premier destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, especially known for its impressive fall raptor migrations. Our site is celebrated for the late-season flights of Red-tailed Hawks and Golden Eagles, with notable records like the 323 Golden Eagles spotted in 2018.
Join us for various programs and events that enrich the community's connection to nature. Our new summer program, led by John G., was a resounding success in 2024. We also host an annual bird seed sale to support local programming, including field trips, youth summer programs, and speaker events. Your purchases directly support the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society's initiatives.
Mark your calendars for our special events, such as the Franklin Mountain Hawkwatch Program on September 11, 2024, with Andy Mason, co-president of DOAS, and a visit to the Hawkwatch on September 15, 2024, sponsored by the Otsego County Conservation Association.
Explore the wonders of nature through our workshops, such as the Nature Journaling Workshop with James Van Gelder on September 14, 2024, or delve into the world of Nature Photography with Rick Bunting on September 20, 2024.
We invite you to our Open House at the Franklin Mountain Sanctuary and Hawkwatch on October 5, 2024, for a family-friendly day filled with workshops, trail walks, and encounters with rescued birds from Falcon Heart Rescue.

"Stopped in for a quick walk on the red trail. Swamp candles and marsh speedwell blooming along the water. Many green frogs. Some lovely groups of ghost pipes emerging in the wooded portion of the trail. And wood frogs. Early July isn't the right time to catch the hawks and vultures but there's plenty of other wildlife to enjoy."
"Had a blast going to the hawkwatch. There are three trails you can take. They are fairly short, the red trail is the longest. Probably the most marked trails I’ve ever seen. You will not get lost or go off trail. The terrain has some hills and roots and rocks and boxes. It honestly was fun. There’s also a small creek that runs through the red trail which is cool and a pond with a dock to go out on. The view of the valley is beautiful. You will definitely see birds here! I highly recommend coming to get away and seeing nature or a fun little hike!"
"Excellent view on a clear day. We had binoculars so there's that. hint. Small picnic area with a couple out buildings. Nice walk to the viewing areas. Fairly well marked pathways around the property. Very small parking area. Go slow is easy to miss."
"A very short hike with some pretty great views. Snow was knee deep so getting higher than the lookout wasn't exactly easy. I'll definitely be up when the snow melts."
"Lovely little hidden gem. Lost track of time walking around and watching the Red Tail Hawks, Vultures, Bald Eagles, and many more, migrate South. Very knowledgeable and friendly people from all over. Slightly steep incline up but very short so okay for most. Bring a chair, snacks, sunglasses, binoculars and cameras"
