Welcome to the official website of the Consulate General of Hungary, located at 223 East 52nd Street, Manhattan, New York. As an integral part of Hungary's diplomatic mission, we are committed to fostering strong bilateral relations between Hungary and the United States, while providing essential services and support to Hungarian citizens and those interested in Hungary.
Our Services
At the Consulate General, we offer a range of consular services to Hungarian citizens residing in or visiting the United States. These services include passport issuance and renewal, notarization, civil registration, and assistance in legal matters. We also provide information and support for Hungarians planning to travel to the United States, ensuring they are well-informed about entry requirements and conditions for legal stay.
Important Travel Information
For Hungarian citizens traveling to the United States, it is crucial to be aware of the strict enforcement of U.S. immigration regulations. Whether visiting for tourism, business, or transit purposes, travelers must adhere to the conditions stipulated by the U.S. authorities. Overstaying or violating visa conditions can lead to severe consequences, including detention, deportation, and long-term bans on re-entry.
For those traveling under the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA), a maximum stay of 90 days is allowed. It is essential to apply for ESTA at least 72 hours before departure and remember that ESTA is not a visa. For stays exceeding 90 days or for purposes such as study or employment, a visa is required.
Assistance and Support
While our consulate is here to assist Hungarian citizens, it is important to note that we cannot intervene in cases involving violations of U.S. immigration laws. We strongly advise all travelers to familiarize themselves with U.S. travel and immigration regulations to avoid any legal issues during their stay.
For more detailed information on visas and the Visa Waiver Program, please visit the U.S. Embassy in Hungary's website or the official ESTA website. "Excellent service: very helpful and knowledgeable people. I have contacted Consulate General of Republic of Hungary located in New York by phone and e-mail ~ to get information needed regarding verification of certain document regarding my Hungarian citizenship acquired by descent (ancestry). Representatives who were helping me at any time that I was calling them by phone were very nice and kind and gave me very detailed informations and instructions about my matter. Very patient and friendly ~ I can say that I am very thankful for clarification of things that were my concern and that I I greatly appreciate all of the help received and I admire those who are working in this location ~ very professional, accurate and helpful. Communication can be in Hungarian or English language.~ it is your personal choice how is easier for you to explain them your issue and seek their advice. Consulate General of Republic of Hungary located in New York can be reached by phone ~ unlike Hungarian Consulate located in Miami that can be reached only by e-mail. I was advised that my issue will be best resolved if contacting Hungarian Consulate in Miami ~ and that I contact them via e-mail with including Hungarian Consulate New York too. In general ~ my experience regarding Hungarian Consulate located in New York was extremely pleasant and very helpful. We communicated in Hungarian and English language. I would add that Hungarian Consulate in New York can and should be an example of how their citizens should be treated at any location. Thank you."
"I had to renew my original Hungarian passport about 6 years ago so I made an appointment. Fortunately I was able to park about a block away so it was a quick walk to the consulate. The staff was very helpful to me and took my new passport photo right there. I'm not sure why there are negative reviews as all my experiences here have been great. Now, I'm in the process of getting citizenship papers (passports and birth certificates as well as registering my marriage license) but the system says there are no appointments. I'll call today when they open and see what's available."
"The staff at the consulate have been very helpful and efficient in person."
"Got my passport renewed today and was extremely impressed by the efficiency of the staff and the ease of using the online appointment system. The person helping me was friendly and was able to get everything processed quickly. Couldn't have been a better experience as far as passport renewals go!"
"I recently had my passport renewed and wow, outstanding experience. You have to make an appointment. I was in and out in literally 15 minutes. They even do the passport photo right than and there, so I didn't need to bring one. The gentleman who helped me was super nice, excellent personality."
