Dr. Karen Scandrett, MD, is a highly esteemed geriatrician, certified in both internal medicine and geriatric medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She practices at UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside Hospital, where she also directs the geriatric medicine fellowship and the geriatrics training track for the Internal Medicine residency program.

Dr. Scandrett received her medical degree from the University of Chicago in 1996. She completed her primary care internal medicine residency at Cambridge Hospital and pursued a geriatrics fellowship at the Harvard Division on Aging. Additionally, she earned a master’s degree in public health from Harvard. Before joining the UPMC Division of Geriatrics in 2012, Dr. Scandrett was a faculty member at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, where she coordinated education in post-acute care.

At UPMC, Dr. Scandrett has been instrumental in several initiatives, including piloting the geriatric trauma consultation service at Presbyterian Hospital, attending on the geriatric service at Magee Women’s Hospital, and providing post-acute care at Heritage Place. In 2019, she transitioned to an office-based practice at Shadyside Hospital, where she continues to provide exceptional care to patients aged 65 and older.

Dr. Scandrett's clinical interests include patient-centered deprescribing, biopsychosocial approaches to chronic illness management, and geriatric-sensitive quality improvement in acute and post-acute care. She is also dedicated to expanding training opportunities in geriatric medicine.
