UPMC Passavant - McCandless Emergency Department 9100 Babcock Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15237
About the Business
UPMC Passavant - McCandless Emergency Department is dedicated to providing comprehensive 24/7 emergency care to residents in Pittsburgh’s northern suburbs. Our state-of-the-art facility ensures that patients receive the highest quality of care regardless of the time of day or the complexity of their medical condition.
Our team of expert physicians is committed to delivering prompt and effective treatment for a wide range of emergencies. In collaboration with UPMC Passavant–Cranberry, we leverage advanced technologies such as stroke telemedicine to link with specialists at the UPMC Stroke Institute, facilitating timely and accurate treatment for stroke patients through high-tech videoconferencing.
For cardiac emergencies, our Cardiac Cath Team works closely with the UPMC Cardiology Department. If a heart attack is suspected from an abnormal EKG, our emergency physicians can activate the cardiac cath team even before the patient arrives at the ER, ensuring rapid intervention with procedures like balloon angioplasty and stent placement within 30 minutes of arrival.
In addition to adult care, we have a strong partnership with UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, enabling us to provide exceptional pediatric emergency care. Board-certified pediatric emergency specialists are available 24/7 to consult in real-time with our emergency doctors and families. We also ensure seamless follow-up care for pediatric patients, scheduling necessary appointments before they leave our Emergency Department (ED).
For less complex medical issues, our Fast Track service offers expedited care by certified nurse practitioners or physician assistants, working under the guidance of experienced emergency medicine physicians.
Please note that if you believe you have been exposed to COVID-19 and are experiencing mild symptoms without breathing difficulties, you should schedule a test at a designated testing location rather than visiting the Emergency Department. For severe symptoms or breathing difficulties, seek immediate emergency care.
For any medical emergency, always call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For immediate assistance with a mental health crisis, dial 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Stay connected with your health information through MyUPMC or the UPMC Central Pa Portal for patients of UPMC-affiliated doctors in Central Pa, and the UPMC Cole Connect Patient Portal for UPMC Cole patients.

"If 0 stars were an option, I would choose that, waited 3.5 hours for blood work when the doctor said 1hr, insane. I went into the ER for stomach pain and vomiting and found nothing out, a whole 5 hour trip for no cause. I'm still in pain and nauseous."
"I’m never going back. I recommend others to choose a different Emergency Department, if it isn’t too much trouble. This place is really terrible. Some select people need attitude adjustments. Some people need way more training, and they will hurt you!!! Take your loved ones elsewhere, if you can. It’s not a good place. They make you so uncomfortable by treating you poorly and give you drugs you don’t need. Passavant has the nickname “Passaway”, and it’s for a good reason. After being talked down to over and over and over and misdiagnosed and mistreated, someone should investigate this place. I think they’d find bad problems. I really don’t like this place."
"I went to this ER earlier this week (Sunday December 4th) with serious symptoms and reason to be concerned about my heart. I was there for 3 hours. I was never taken back to a room. My doctor was Jonathan Landis, and I do not know if I met him or not. If so, he never introduced himself. I was discharged despite my protests. I was also discharged with an IV still in my arm. Once I realized that they had left it in, I had to go back to have them remove it. I understand that the medical system is under strain right now, but the quality of care at this ER is simply dangerous."
"Just had 5+ hours there. The staff are overworked and blaming the patients. I overheard 2 nurses complaining. Plus I had the doctor tell me they were overworked with no beds when I questioned the un-needed x-rays and CT scan they ordered after talking with me less than 30 seconds. I think the worst part is they have these floor stickers everywhere that say "compassion is our job" and it's like an insult to see; the people who work there have no time for compassion and good luck speaking up about your treatment. They don't have time to be nice or, you know, LOOK AT YOUR WOUNDS before ordering you to wait for expensive procedures. Not my first bad experience there. I've told my wife to only take me to this place again if I'm already unconscious. I won't trust them to give the best, or even adequate, care. I didn't even get a bandaid for a bleeding wound! In 5 hours! And again, the staff is overworked and full of snark to the patients. Set your expectations low if you go here and good luck."
"I went to the ER yesterday around 8:30 AM with a severe stomach pain. The waiting time was only under 10 minutes before a nurse took me to a room. I was in so much pain. Steve a nurse who was walking by came into my room to get me ready for an IV and took blood for lab testing, but he was just helping Kaylee who was my main nurse. I can't thank Steve enough for his kindness and Kaylee for being so professional and caring even tough they both were taking care of several patients. Steve was right, it was a kidney stone. Thank you guys!"
