"I went to inpatient treatment here when I was 15 years old for an eating disorder, I had an alright time apart from issues with one specific staff member who ended up giving me trauma when she was supposed to be there to help me. The things she did to me have affected me to this day, years later as an adult, and when I addressed what happened to the higher-ups, they didn't care. I had other staff members telling me that what she did was wrong and that they would help me report it, so I knew it was wrong. I am 99.99% sure what happened to me in this unit wasn't legal. I am so sad for my younger self who had to go through that, and never got justice for it, and I only hope she's not out there somewhere doing the same disgusting things to other young children who are already having a hard time with life. I wouldn't recommend any child go to inpatient at this hospital."
"I've had great experiences with UIHC outpatient psychiatry over the past year. I was connected with a doctor quickly, and have been seen via telemedicine (video calls) exclusively. I've never had to go into the hospital for an appointment. My provider is thoughtful and caring. I've been supported in my medication management and any changes we think are best. UIHC processes my insurance correctly and I only pay my specialist copay for each visit."
"I cannot speak to any of the other providers besides mine, but true providers with which I see are so compassionate, patient, sweet, and very personable, while at the same time pushing me in a constructive way that doesn’t make me feel stupid, annoying, or upset. Lauren Thomann & Rachel Leach are a credit to their fields! I have encountered other practitioners from time to time and they too have been amazing (at least the NPs, PAs, and therapists, most the inpatient staff doctors don’t understand what team based care is and will escalate situations when it comes to getting upset at being treated like I’m less deserving of high quality care, since I have mental illnesses. I am rating the outpatient clinic as 5-stars because I have only had great experiences with them. And the receptionists are always nice and enjoyable to talk with."
"Unlike their TV ads, the level of care that they provide on the intake process is simply unethical. Even though I was, for years, a former patient, I could not get hooked up with my former doc because, according to them, time had run out. So I did their phone intake process in late April, 2021. I did not hear back from them, so both emailed and wrote a letter to my former UIHC doc, but got no response. Finally, last week (30 June, 2021), I got a phone call from an intake person. So that initial process took over 60 days. Worse, I was informed that the earliest appt that I could get would be in January 2022... a full 6 months after I first contacted their psychiatry department. This is simply very poor care. I've been noticing more UIHC feel-good commercials -- for their personal level of care -- on You Tube. But that is simply marketing and did not match my experience. Imagine if I had an acute need (which I very well could have)? Pretty bad."
"This is absolutely the worst patient practiced I have ever experienced. I was misdiagnosed, put on medicine which has made my life miserable and riddled with side effects, have now high blood pressure, gained 40 lbs, high blood sugar, and muscle aches and spasms. I have been refused multiple times a second opinion, and am forced to take an injection without getting to take medication by self. Also, the doctors and staff refuse to transfer my treatment to the county I reside in. I had to begin to record doctor visits because they didn’t listen at all. This is not my personality to speak ill of such a place, but if its help you need seek somewhere else. Also, they have called the sheriff that came to my place of employment because I rescheduled days ahead of time an appointment causing me to miss two weeks of work. Absolutely the worst treatment I have and will ever receive. They neglect to better themselves by reading proposition 22 and educate themselves on todays standing on mental health published by mental health america. Recently the doctor told me she is only keeping me on this medication because of scrutiny and because of insurance purposes. I am a business owner and this has ruined character I have built up for a success. Disappointment does not describe the scrutiny of the last year of my life due to the doctors ad staff and the University of Iowa, which disappoints me being a prior student and athlete at the university of Iowa. Thank you- Robby Storm I recently was committed from my out patient service provider to inpatient, causing me to miss work for more than a week, this Offer was done prematurely due to me having a future scheduled appointment I was adhering to. While at the emergency room I was hand cuffed treated poorly by doctors and administrators. They made a mistake and had given my personal belongings with 600 dollars in cash to another person and there standards have continued to spiral down. I would avoid what seems to be this struggling unit with in the U of Iowa."
