"Right on the mountain. People who work there were so nice. The rooms are older but who cares, I was there for the skiing and a convenient place to sleep"
"We really only skied at Kirkwood Resort and ate our lunches at the Mountain Resort complex. Known for the abundant annual snow fall, the skiing is great. This Resort is spread along a ridge, so the total descent on the trails are only the height of the ridge. You find yourself going up and down a fair bit. However the elevation (base @ 7,800 ft & highest elevation @ > 10K ft) and the snow volume make this a really reliable place to ski. Also known for ots dry (relatively, for the Sierras) powder. The Resort itself really could be better. Very few dining options, and the surrounding area has no power grid feed, so services are extremely limited. We were stuck in the area during a major snow storm (skiing was closed entirely by noon due to high winds), and found that we had to make do with what stash of food we had brought. All the service workers bailed, so restaurants had to close, because it was announced that Highway 50 was to close after 4 pm. In addition, the Kirkwood Meadows Public Utility, which supplies power to Kirkwood Meadows Resort, has really poor public communications. There was NO announcement regarding power outage in the area, when power outage from San Francisco through neighboring NV was all over national news!"
"Full disclosure, I'm a condo owner. I don't understand why people go to crowded Lake Tahoe, when you could have the solitude of Kirkwood. You can't beat the location for skiing, 4 chair lifts within 200' of the building accessing 50% of the mountain and Nordic trail access is across the street, equipment rentals are in the same building. In the summer mountain biking trail network is right out the front door, there is free disc golf, tennis, and pickle ball, and 4 alpine lakes within 15 min drive, and tons of hiking nearby. The rooms are a little dated but clean, but plans for a remodel are in the works. Most units come with fully outfitted kitchen. You'll want the kitchen as evening dining options at Kirkwood are limited to non existent. The hours of front desk being staffed are limited to 9 am to 4 pm, but when they are there they are friendly and will do whatever they can to assist you."
"My first time at Kirkwood and I loved it! I purchased an Epic Pass this season so I've been slowly visiting all of the ski resorts in Tahoe. Kirkwood is small but it is perfect for beginners - there is an entire area with just greens and blues. Not too crowded either! I stayed at one of the rooms right on the slope. It was great! I have no complaints. We had a view of the lifts and our stay was comfortable. The room a little dated but was extremely clean. Overnight parking was a bit inconvenient since it is located in a specific lot about half a mile away from our hotel room. I loved that Kirkwood had "shuttles" between the two ski lift areas and that our room came stocked with granola bars. I even saw some Kirkwood staff walking around with a basket of granola bars passing them out to people! The only "con" I can think of at Kirkwood is that the restaurants and shops are realllyyyy limited past 5pm. I came in December and there was one bar open at night and the menu was small. Kirkwood village is pretty non-existent and the small store is really expensive! Next time, I will bring an assortment of instant noodles so I don't go hungry in my hotel room. The room did have a coffee maker and a microwave."
"Amazing condo right on the mountain. I can literally ski to the lift after going down one flight of stairs. During the week there's only one bar/restaurant open in the evening so be sure to bring plenty of food. My room had a microwave and a fridge. Be aware that the snowcats may run half the night but the rooms are pretty well insulated and fairly quiet."
