"Do not live here unless you have no other options. Several fire alarms pulled throughout the year, hot water shut off at random times, room key has failed several times and had to be reset, no light in bedrooms, 3 broken stools when I moved in, massive pipe leak a few months ago, one working elevator at the front entrance (horrible with the amount of people who live in Wahu), and something usually wrong in the gym. Probably forgetting other things, but I would not consider living here again unless the price was at least halved."
"Horrible experience the last 2 years at this apartment. As others have mentioned they locked everyone out of their apartments and didn't fix the issue till days later. This year the elevator has been constantly broken as are the garage doors. We had a smoke detector run out of batteries and after telling them the issue they told us just to unplug the smoke detector. We ended up not having one for almost 2 weeks. There are plenty of cosmetic problems with the apartments as well which have still never been fixed since our move-in date 2 years ago. They also love changing the key systems for garages and doors, so me and my roommate have had to get our keys changed at least 5 times. My biggest issue is the management themselves as they introduced a new company this year and have now added a mandatory 2$ fee mid-way through the lease. The phone number on Google also didn't work for nearly a year, so the only way to get in contact is to go to the office which has absurd hours. There are plenty of other apartments on campus, I would recommend staying far away from Wahu."
"If you are looking for an apartment for UMN campus, I highly recommend looking elsewhere. For the price you are paying each month, there are plenty of other comparable apartments with far fewer problems. Upon move-in, our unit was not clean- there were stains in all of my and my roommate's bedroom carpet, marks on our walls, broken (still broken) kitchen stools, and there are white paint specks all over our hardwood. They just painted over command strips and tape from the last renters. Our laundry sliding door has broken twice and my roommate's bedroom closet door also fell off the track. Over winter break they decided to reset all the locks and require us to either get an app or reset our keys with the front office (upon arrival from break). Then, right after this, maintenance "accidentally" deleted every single key from the system, locking out every resident in the apartment. They then required all roommates to collectively go to the office to get our keys reset. More recently, the fire alarms went off for hours at 3 am because they didn't bother to heat the end wing study rooms, which caused a pipe to burst and the 2 & 3rd floors to flood. The main study lounge on the second floor has now been closed for over a month. This then broke the elevators, which have been working on and off the entire time we have lived here. The hot water is constantly going out. The amenities shown during tours are never kept up with (pool/hot tub closed, no resident events, etc). You have to pay $20/night just to park in the garage and they strictly enforce towing, even if you're there for a short time. The "security" is a woman sitting at the front desk with her dog who really does nothing when actual problems arise. My friend who also lives in this building witnessed a guy trying to steal the computers in the computer lab the other day and when she alerted security, the woman told her "yeah he was in here last night running the halls naked". Absolutely no protection/security as to who can get into the building. Packages are always getting stolen, just left outside the Amazon lockers or at the door. Overall just not worth the price or hassle as you never know what you're going to come home to."
"Move-in day was a great experience! The staff is so friendly and helpful and made the entire experience a breeze. My apartment was clean and just what I expected."
"I know Wahu has a generally bad reputation, but this is my second year and I've generally been content with it, especially since it's a student apartment. Because of that, I've sucked it up with things like slow maintenance, especially since the maintenance people themselves are kind, or the continuous lack of hot water in winters, and have appreciated the renovations that Wahu has done for us. However, I'm not sure if it's due to the change in management or just a string of bad luck, but the continuous renter's insurance requirement changes, both elevators being broken and the second one still having yet to be fixed, the water being freezing cold twice in a week, having needed 3 key adjustments, amongst other things has resulted in many of us being fed up, especially amongst management that is either fed up too or does not seem to care."
