"I've been coming to the Phoenix Society since August of last year (8/2022-10/2023 so far). It's a wonderful community, swordfighting is a really fun way to work out, we practice historical fencing systems based on primary sources, and the teachers are all fantastic at both fighting and teaching. Lots of loner gear which means you can start sparring as soon as you feel ready. Everyone works together to become better fencers, and the experienced students always help newer folks. People of most body types can get really good at HEMA when they find a fencing style which complements their natural strengths. Mordhau Historical Combat does the German KdF fencing tradition, while we focus on Italian sources like Fiore and Giganti. They're another great option if you live closer to Mesa, less loaner gear but very welcoming, with really good fighters and great teachers. I personally would recommend PSHS first. Beginner-friendly Mon. night longsword, Thurs. rapier, Fri. saber all 7-9 PM, sparring on Wed. 7-9 and Sat. 10-1 PM"
"Great club filled with great people. Not to mention a wide variety of fencing options as well as instructors encouraging and helping students on their own individual journey within hema."
"Best way to learn about how to sword fight in the valley. They go by a number of historical texts, which are essentially memoirs of hundreds of years of successful sword fighters. Other clubs kinda do their own thing and get absolutely dunked on by this one. If you're interested I recommend checking them out. Low cost, friendly, available regularly."
"This is where I started doing HEMA! The people are awesome and the instructors are some of the most skilled and knowledgeable martial artists around. Friendly and fun atmosphere and excellent classes and sparring. If you like swords then you need to come here."
"An excellent club focused on teaching armed martial arts from European traditions. Having been part of the club for 3 years, and practicing martial arts for 10+ years, it is undoubtedly one of the most positive and generous clubs I have been a part of. There is regular sparring, technical analysis, scholarship, and community. Loaner gear is available for new club members, and is very affordable to attend. The club also has relationships with equipment vendors to get you discounts on your own gear. If you are interested in the historical fighting arts of Europe, come on down and give the club a try."
