A1 Mattress

"The experience was like having a starring role in "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," with one of the bears hell-bent on selling me beachfront property in Kansas. Mattress #1: The owner had me try out a latex mattress in the store (factory). The one he had me order didn't, in any way, match the comfort of the mattress I tested. I got stuck with a too-firm mattress and it took a long time to do an exchange. This was after waiting a month to get it. There are no latex mattresses you can try out in the store, unless he happens to have a used one he can pawn off on you. Care to get bedbugs? Mattress #2: This was an exchange, but left my apartment immediately because the dimensions were off, the ticking looked as if it were fabricated from leftover, mismatched pieces. The stitching was coming apart on one side, contained the wrong type of foam, and none of the seams were taped. Mattress #3: Another exchange. It seemed okay when it arrived, except it didn't have the heavy, cotton twill ticking the owner had promised. It also had a couple of black, pea-sized stains on one side. I was desperate to sleep on something more comfortable, so I agreed to keep it. At about 3:00 a.m., I was awakened by a strong chemical odor (apparently, activated by my body heat). It smelled like formaldehyde. The fumes were so intense that I soon removed it from the bedroom, covered it with plastic sheeting, and opened my windows. I had to wait two weeks before I could get the company to remove it and offer a refund. Thoughts to Ponder: * None of the mattresses had a legally-required label attached. Ticking material was one-sided (synthetic, stiff material on other side). * Owner is frequently out of town and you'll have to wait to resolve any problem. * Warranty covers "materials and workmanship" (no detailed contract). * If it begins raining just before delivery, you'll have to reschedule. * All latex mattresses are custom manufactured. * I wasted about three and a half months trying to buy a mattress."
