"Wish there was negative stars . I Paid a deposit on an apartment and didn’t get approved or denied yet. emailed the manager told her I was keeping my options opened and got approved at another place & I didn’t think I would be able to afford the rent. I never said in the email I wanted to cancel my rental application or that I was going to go to the other place I got approved at. she just ASSUMED I did and just kept my $300. Probably for herself because what would they need that $300 for ????. She knows I’m homeless with a child and took advantage of me. She just assumed because I emailed her that that she would take it upon herself to cancel my application and keep my money that I don’t really have in the first place as I’m homeless with a child and wasn’t sure if I would get approved that’s why I was keeping my options open so I could make sure I got housed within the month . Scamming a homeless single mother with a child is the lowest of the low. Something very shady going on here. Going to contact BBB, the management company and a few other outlets to get the word out."
"It's time for some honesty and some background regarding the accuracy of the reviews prior to this one and what is going on as of this review. I am very good friends with somebody that worked for a mold restoration company , the very same that did in fact work on the restoration of this building last year. Looking through the reviews he was able to confirm that much of what had been said was very true at the time that the job began and the new management took over. The extent of the damage that he described does not disappear overnight. Once the restoration is done it can still take some time for the lingering odors to dissipate entirely. It has now been about a year since this took place. At this time Mold is no longer an issue. Issue number 2 that was brought up a lot was the stated pet odors in the hallway. There are several things that can be attributed to this. First, this would also have a large connection again to the change of management and something that takes time. I am told the prior management would let just about anyone rent their property regardless of background, when the new management took over, they could not simply revoke pre existing leases without proper cause but did begin to perform regular inspections to ensure that nothing too shady was taking place and that the units were being given at least close to proper care. At this time it does seem like this is really starting to show an effect. My unit for example was in incredibly rough shape 2 weeks prior to my move in but when the day arrived everything was SPOTLESS had I not seen the condition the prior tenant had left it in I would legitimately never have known. Now, I will not lie and say that there is not a "Pet Smell" in the hallways from time to time but anyone expecting otherwise really needs to consider that with the structure of the building and size of the hallways combined with them being enclosed, this is going to be a thing. It should also be noted that quite a few of the animals kept within the building are service animals which leads to the next important factor. As of the writing of this review, this building has been designated as housing for those with lower incomes which includes a large number of people from different walks of life from young adults getting started, Middle aged individuals on hard times (Me), as well as some seniors and retired veterans. A major perk is that all doors, appliances and even showers are equipped for use by disabled individuals that may be confined to a wheelchair. There are upper and lower peek holes, and all door knobs are bar style which some well trained service dogs can open. As for the appliances, in my unit there is a refrigerator and Freezer combo, a dishwasher, and while not in all units, mine is fortunate to have a washer and dryer. For those units that do not have a Washer/dryer there are laundry rooms on each floor that are FREE. There have been complaints about the size of all of the appliances, and I admit, you do have to be mindful of freezer space and the washer and dryer do only handle very small loads. HOWEVER. An apartment complex, especially one offering rates as low as what this one is, are not even required to furnish any of these things. The washer and dryer are small but at this rate I have found very few that have even hookups, let alone actually provide the actual units themselves. All and all I can say that I am happier with this apartment than I have been with any I've lived in in my life so far and that's quite a few. If you are considering giving them a look it is 100% worth your time to ask for a tour."
"My cousin and I moved into the building in July of 2017. First impressions were that the inside of the building smelled completely of animal urine and our unit was not properly cleaned prior to us moving in. Our washer inside the unit, dishwasher and my bathroom sink immediately needed fixed, and maintenance took care of it within a reasonably timely manner. Things were going well within the first few months...until it the cold time of the year approached and it was time to start using the heat. At first, our heat would run CONSTANTLY but would never reach a temperature above 69 degrees. We brought this to the property managers’ attention but were told it was because “the building was old and there’s a lot of windows in our unit”. Two weeks pass by and our heat completely stops working and will not turn on. It took a whole week before maintenence came to look at our system and we were told that they needed to order a new fan and that it wouldn’t take more than a week or two. We were given two small space heaters to use in the mean time. When we tried to use the space heaters in our separate rooms at the same time, it would blow a fuse so we hardly got to use them. A week goes by and they claim that the fan has not arrived yet. Another week passes and still no information. Our utility bill for November comes and it ridiculously high because of the space heaters. The third and fourth weeks without heat roll around, and still nothing. Temperatures at night were absolutely freezing, and having 3-6 huge windows in our bedrooms that leaked air was horrible. I fell very ill with pneumonia but couldn’t take more than 3 days off of work because of our high utility bills, I am 19 years old just getting on my feet and this was really hard for me. It took me 3 weeks to fully recover because I could never properly rest or even get warm inside of my apartment. We were left without heat for 6-7 WEEKS before the fan was replaced. We thought this would resolve our issues with the heat completely but of course we were wrong. The heat still ran constantly and we knew there had to be something else wrong but every time we brought it to our property managers’ attention, we were never taken seriously. The warmer season approaches and it’s time to turn the air on, our air again would run constantly and would never reach a temperature below 74 degrees. We demand that HVAC comes and takes a look. When they check it out, we are informed that our heat/air unit is HALF the size that it needs to be to warm/cool our apartment! So this means that the whole year we were living here, we were paying more than necessary on our utility bills because of the buildings mistake! How could they have gotten away with installing an air unit that is not big enough to warm/cool the apartment sufficiently??? Our property manager never replaced the unit and for the last 3 months of our lease, I saw him in his office maybe 2 times. He never returned emails and our issue never got resolved. The end of July comes and he finally gets ahold of me to do a walk through before I turn over the keys and move on. He marks everything as clean and there was no damage done to the apartment. He tells me that we will receive our $600 deposit check within 2 weeks. It is now December 18th and I still have received NOTHING. I have called multiple times a week for 5 months now and 9 times out of 10 nobody would answer or return my calls. I recently spoke on the phone with whoever is now in the leasing office and I was informed that the old property manager was fired and they had no idea what to do for my situation. They tell me to try and get in touch with the building owners at Cohen Esrey and my phone calls have yet to be returned. *I understand that this building is under new management now, but I am just trying to inform others on my honest experience and bring attention to my unresolved issues.*"
"When I first moved into the building, it was fine. There was the occasional loud and creepy neighbor but that is expected with every apartment building. Well, over the months I started seeing less and less of the building manager and it took forever for minor issues to be resolved. Recently, I moved into an apartment on the first floor of the same building and I have had a roach issue since July. If I was a dirty person, I would have had the same issue on the third floor but I didn’t. When I can reach a building manager, I get the same “we are doing what we can to fix it, it will be a few weeks before you see any improvements” reply. Well, those “few weeks” have turned into months and I no longer have the patience to deal with it. They are completely unprofessional and from their response to my current issue, they do not care about the maintenance of their building. I will say that they did send an exterminator out but they only sprayed the first floor (there are four floors and a basement). It is a good place to live if your apartment is clean when you move in and it isn’t infested with roaches. Aside from that, I have nothing else to say."
"I lived here with my domestic partner and her service animal for just under one hellish year. After a month of grueling paperwork and phone calls and mailings and faxes and emails, we moved in mid-July some years ago, when it was a new establishment, only recently redesignated for housing for the disabled and unwealthy. Before the month was out, the police had been called to the building more than 10 times. This was sufficient for the building manager, who was never in, to declare to certain residents that if the police were necessary, he would call or fine whoever did. We went through two different maintenance employees, the second of whom was caught stealing pain medications from a cancer patient while kicking her cat! We, unfortunately, had to have this monster in repeatedly for repairs, which were never completed correctly the first time. Every bicycle eventually went missing, and the manager refused to share the video evidence with anyone. We lived downstairs from a drug addict in a wheelchair whose disability was something else every day. She refused food, had a mean cat, and stole from her caregiver, who was fired for this. One neighbor attacked my girlfriend while drunk, screaming about "f-ing lesbians" and how she didn't abuse her puppy but loved him. We watched her boyfriend beat the poor leggy black lab mix quite regularly while in the courtyard walking him; and we called the police when we saw it. The laundry machines never worked. The elevator was almost always out of order. There were two people in electric wheelchairs on the second floor, And No Way Down but the elevator. Our last night there, the same man attempted to break in three times in under an hour. We called the police after the second effort. Before they arrived, he made his third foray at our door, mentioning a firearm and his willingness to use it on us. The police never found him. It was (is) an immense relief to leave. I understand that the building is under new management now. But I know for a fact that several of the residents remain. Renter Beware!!"
