About the Business
Greenwood Cemetery, located at 91569 Highway 202 in Astoria, Oregon, is a peaceful rural setting where visitors can learn about the rich history of the area through the tales of an Irish storyteller and the warmth of a Scots lassie. The dedicated caretakers, Michael and Lynda Leamy, have been serving local families and global visitors for over three decades, offering support and comfort to those who come to the cemetery in times of sorrow or reflection.
The cemetery's monuments have weathered the test of time, and preservation efforts are ongoing. Groups and individuals are encouraged to get involved in helping to maintain and restore the historical cemetery and its monuments. The Friends of Astoria Greenwood Cemetery organization has been established to support these preservation efforts and raise funds for the cemetery's continued upkeep.
Each year, the cemetery comes alive during the annual "Talking Tombstones" event, where community members bring the stories of the dearly departed to life through engaging vignettes. This event, organized by the Clatsop County Historical Society, offers a unique opportunity to learn about the history of the area and honor those who have passed on.
Whether you are seeking solace in the serene surroundings of Greenwood Cemetery or interested in contributing to its preservation, the caretakers and volunteers welcome your support. "Beautifully kept, peaceful and comforting atmosphere, great location and view."
"Very beautiful and peaceful. Someone had commented that "green" burial is supported. What green burial is, is direct burial into the soil without a casket or embalming. Typically wrapped in a biodegradable shroud or in a biodegradable basket. When they offer this, I will be the first in line to buy my cozy little spot. I don't have any plans to die soon, but I would like to stay in Astoria when I do, but only if I can be in a completely green burial site."
"Peaceful and lovely cemetery. Caretaker is very quick to respond, personable, professional and gave a very interesting, educational and yet humorous history of the cemetery too upon request. Thank you for you and your wife's dedication, brutal never ending work, and amazing enthusiasm!"
"Interesting and large cemetery with many interesting memorials. Well cared for. Small peaceful columbarium with a charming garden. I plan to visit again."
"Greenwood Cemetery is atop at hill overlooking Young's River, and down further, the mouth of the Columbia River, a few minutes from Astoria. There are some nice species trees scattered around, and it is surrounded by a cedar and sitka riparian area. I saw probably six species of birds there in just a few minutes. The owners/managers are very supportive of "green" burial--following the wishes of the dead one. No herbicides or pesticides are used, and the pollinating flowers mix in the groundcover.. Greenwood is also a pioneer cemetery, and there are 10,000 people buried there. It's very interesting walking through the stones and seeing so many familiar names."
