"Though Henry Clay is not generally well known today he was very influential. He served as Congressman, Senator, Speaker of the House and Secretary of State and was known as the Great Compromiser. This statue was originally at the foot of Canal Street. That location is where the mob that carried out the worst lynching in the City’s history gathered before storming the Old Parish Prison."
