The Old School House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been recently restored with the help of a matching grant from Pierce County.
Operated as a membership exercise and fitness facility, the Old School House provides essential fitness and social opportunities for island residents. The park also features a bat breeding colony in the attic of the School House, which is being protected by the Park District. The grounds surrounding the Old School House, including the playground and court, are open to the public for free use.
In addition to the Old School House park, visitors can also enjoy two other nearby parks - Tom White Park and Idie Ulsh Park. The history of the school dates back to 1882 when Pierce County School District No. 24 was established, and the first schoolhouse was built by Nels Petterson. The school has since been known as Wide Awake Hollow School, named by teacher Mary M. Eade in 1891.
