"While Dr. Chen appears to be a capable physician with a pleasant demeanor, I ultimately chose to switch doctors because of Chen's reluctance to treat significant problems brought to his attention. On at least six separate occasions, I visited Chen for conditions that other physicians later confirmed should have been treated, but on each occasion, I was routinely told, “Don’t worry about it,” and sent away without treatment. On one occasion, I saw Chen for severe plantar faciitis that all but left me unable to walk on my left foot. I requested a cortisone injection, which had helped in the past, but Dr. Chen refused to administer one. I also asked for a referral to a physical therapist, but Dr. Chen refused that request too. Incredibly, he told me that I should, instead, stop wearing regular shoes and always wear sturdy hiking boots – hardly an option given my professional role. On another occasion, I consulted Dr. Chen about a fungal infection of my right big toenail. I requested that he prescribe a course of Lamisil, which is the customary treatment. However, Dr. Chen declined, claiming that that the widely-used antifungal medication is too hard on the liver. “I’m going to let it go untreated,” he told me. “Toenail fungus is just the price you pay for living in a society where people don’t go barefoot.” Ultimately, I found a podiatrist who gave me a Lamisil scrip, but by that time, the fungus had invaded the nail root, leaving me with a permanently deformed toenail that, some six years later, remains partially detached, discolored and causes near constant pain."
