Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park 144 School Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060
About the Business
Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park is located at 144 School Street in Santa Cruz, California. This park sits atop Mission Hill and offers a patio, gardens, and stunning views of the city. It is home to the only building remaining from the 12th California Mission, Misión la Exaltacion de la Santa Cruz, founded in 1791 by the Franciscans. The park has been restored to its original appearance and features exhibits that tell the story of the mission through the perspective of the Ohlone and Yokuts people.
Visitors can explore the park Thursday through Monday from 10 am to 4 pm, but it is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Online reservations are not available, so be sure to call the park to confirm your visit. The park also offers guided hikes and public programs, as well as backpacking adventures through the Santa Cruz Mountains during the summer months.
The park acknowledges the complex and difficult history of the Spanish Mission system and its impact on California Native American tribes. Efforts are being made to work with the local Native community to create a more welcoming and inclusive space for healing and sharing personal stories of survival and cultural resilience.

"Incredible site. We learned so much. The grounds are well kept and so informative. The Park Ranger was friendly and answered all our questions. We had the best afternoon. Thank you!"
"The 12th mission built in California by the friars. Original mission destroyed by earthquakes in the 1800's. 1/3 size replica built in 1931, by witness statement and interviews. Old adobe still stands though. A reminder of old California and old life We love history and this was good"
"Nice mission to visit & learn about history & culture!"
