"I saw Laura Slippy, a psychiatric nurse working under Dr Thinh, and requested my notes after my appt, she got what I said during my appt completely wrong, maybe it was miscommunication or her own internal biases, either way it's extremely unprofessional and dangerous esp working in the mental health field. I hope she works on her listening skills in the future and takes this seriously because its actually super harmful. I also told her I was nonbinary and she never used my correct pronouns once and even referred to me as "girl" multiple times in our visit and the notes she took for me. This does not feel like a LGBTQ+ friendly office. Overall, my experience with her was not pleasant, I got the impression that she is not interested in having an open mind to what her patients think and is only interested in fitting them inside a box. From our appointment I found she is a very black and white thinker and had no interest in hearing my actual concerns or reason for treatment. Office staff was nice."

"I have Dr Mai to thank for quite literally saving my life. I've been seeing him for the past four years, and in that time he's helped me get my PDD and ADHD under control. He also helped me kick alcohol to the curb...all while being an attentive, compassionate, and personable physician. Keep in mind that folks tend to be more likely to post negative reviews if they had a bad experience, making those experiences overrepresented in these types of formats. Dr. Mai is bound to make mistakes from time to time as all of us are, and his office is VERY busy due to the high demand and limited supply of practitioners for psychiatric services. His staff is always helpful and friendly, though, and he's never let me down. Highly recommended, with no disrespect meant to those posting with negative experiences. I always enjoy my monthly appointments with him, and while he may not be able to help everyone, he's the only psychiatrist in 35 years that has been able to help me get my life back on track."

"South Bay Behavioral Health and Dr. Mai's team are very busy teams. These teams are located in San Jose and provide care for patients. This is different from the pro bono and/or nonprofit work that some of our psychiatric providers will do from time to time. If you are seeing Dr. Mai at South Bay Behavioral Health, you are getting more comprehensive services. If you see Dr. Mai at underserved, non-profit clinics, then he is there to manage medication. The non-profit clinics that he helps have counselors and therapists that refer their patients for medication management. In these cities and counties, there are not enough psychiatrists to help their residents. The only time he agrees to help an underserved nonprofit team is when that location is in dire need of an experienced psychiatrist. We apologize that the services are fragmented in this way. Unfortunately, in these underserved areas, several patients were given psychiatric medication management by providers with zero psychiatric training. This requires time to review and request previous medical records before working on a management protocol. There are patients that are prescribed multiple control substances that can kill horses. Therefore, Dr. Mai will not prescribe medications that are not appropriate in these outpatient settings, but are instead appropriate for addiction medicine teams. It is very difficult to get good and comprehensive services, especially in these underserved areas. We are trying our best to provide these pro-bono and/or non-profit psychiatric services for your area. We apologize that Dr. Mai can only give psychiatric medications help. In the last two years, he and his team has turned down several non-profit teams because they did not have enough counselors and therapists to provide non-medication services. There can be misunderstandings about the services provided. Please understand that what South Bay Behavioral Health does for our patients are different from the services provided by the non-profit clinics you go to. We thank you for your understanding. "These comments ABSOLUTELY baffle me. They do not ring at all true to myself or the 5 friends I have referred to Doctor Mai. I first started seeing Doctor Mai when he first opened his practice in San Jose. During our first appointment he spent an hour talking to me about my issues, the meds I was taking, my traumas and my life. That day, he stopped3 meds, introduced 1 new one. I have seen him once a month since then. The latest he has ever been is ~ 10 minutes. He very quickly demonstrated his concern for me and my wellbeing. Though not a psychotherapist, over time we went through my life. He modified my meds. Doctor Mai was so concerned about my seeming resistance to meds, he ran a slew of genetic testing that ended up being shocking, yet explained sooooooo much. Doctor Mai even purchased a TMS machine. For2 weeks so far. I have gone to treatment everyday. You know what? I feel lighter after each session. and this is only been 3 weeks. I have seen 5 Psychiatrists. Doctor Mai is far and away the most responsive, great listener, truly concerned about my improvement. He has gone out of his COUNTLESS TIMES to do or find things that may have the slimmest of chances of helping me. Without hesitation, I would put my life into Doctor Thinh Duy Mai, M.D.'s hands."
