"This is primarily a cigar shop with a small, walk-in humidor. The atmosphere is always welcoming when I walk in and the attendants are always available for help if needed. Being a pipe smoker, I was happy to see them accommodating the genre by adding a small selection of pipes and pipe tobacco. I would stop in from time to time and purchase a tin or two when I was in the area. The tobacco was reasonably priced and from well known manufacturers like Peterson, Mac baren, Sutliff, Cornell & Diehl and Capstan. A couple weeks ago, I was in the area and decided to pay them a visit. I had been wanting to get a few tins for cellaring along with a few boxes of matches. They offer them complementary and they're perfect for pipe smoking. Going to Maduro's had been on my to do list for a while and I was looking forward to the trip. Tobacco shops are to me what a candy store is to a child. I could easily spend all my money there and over indulge in sweet smoky bliss. Well, none of that was taking place at Maduro's this day. Instead, I learned what "sticker shock" feels like. Maduro's had raised the prices on their tinned tobacco by almost double that of what it costs online. I know there's markup and inflation but seriously asking customers to pay around $50 for a $24 tin of tobacco is insanity. A 3.5 oz tin of Mac Baren Balkan Blend was priced at $46. Every tin, whether it was Mac Baren, Petersons, even the Capstan...was $46. I don't know what they wanted for the Sutliff tins, I didn't bother to look. That wasn't a subtle price increase, this was in your face gouging. I turned around and walked out, dreams of smoky bliss shattered, I was in sticker shock. I went back to my car and looked online to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Sure enough, there's a tin for the same exact blend priced at $24. I'll justify spending a few dollars over retail to support local businesses but Maduro's expectations that it's customers will support these drastic price markups is miscalculated. If this is their normal markup then they need a new distributor. I'm still blown away that they would price their tins that high. I'm sure people buy them at that price as a courtesy but they certainly don't come back. Why would anyone? I can get the same tobacco for twice as less and with free shipping. Here's the kicker, so can Maduro's. So why don't they? Answer, because they think pipe smokers are a dying demographic when nothing could be farther from the truth."
