"Technically I was not on what's marked as the Sawmill Trail but was about a mile east, because my printout map of the Santa Rosa Mtns Natl Monument had me confused. There's an old telephone company service road that goes up into the mountains where Springcrest Drive ends. I hiked that and had a wonderful, and quiet, time. I am not giving 5 stars, though, because of the relative paucity of info on the NM's website map."
"Starting at an elevation of 4,050 ft., the Sawmill Trail is located in a truly unique area in Southern California. Considered to be a sub-region of the Sonoran desert called 'the upper Colorado desert' - you will encounter lush desert plants like yuccas and prickly pair and wildlife like jackrabbits, mule dear, and bobcats as you meander up the grand switchbacks of the Sawmill Trail into the alpine forests of Toro and Santa Rosa Peaks. As you make your way up the trail to a distinct land mark called 'the incinerator' at an elevation of 6,261 ft., you will find unparalleled views of the desert, looking south to the Salton Sea, and northwest to San Jacinto and San Gorgonio peaks. From here, you can challenge yourself to keep climbing up to the peaks or call it a day and head back down."
"Really pretty, well-maintained trail with lots of desert plants, some mountain views and dry Creek bed crossings and a nice parking lot with plenty of parking. I had it pretty much at all to myself when I went and took the Cactus Spring trail to Horsethief Creek crossing, and would definitely go back to check out the other trail."
"Surprisingly beautiful hike. I suspect our elongated spring has helped, but we saw waterfalls, blooming cactus, and excellent vistas. Steady but very manageable grade"
"Fun hike, you walk past some old mining areas and a majority of the year the landscape is green and beautiful."
