About the Business
Elephant Seal Vista Point, located in San Simeon, California, is a must-visit landmark and tourist attraction for anyone looking to witness the incredible annual return of the Northern Elephant Seals to the California coastline. This natural wonder is comparable to some of the most famous animal migrations in the world and is right in California's backyard.
The Elephant Seal Vista Point is just 5 miles north of Hearst Castle along the coast of San Luis Obispo County, making it easily accessible for visitors from all over. From mid-November to mid-January, visitors can witness the dominant bull elephant seals returning to the beach, displacing the sub adult males who have been practicing their skills in hopes of competing for the females' affection.
With about 18,000 elephant seals expected to crowd the four-mile stretch of beach at San Simeon State Beach, visitors can experience a chaotic scene of bulls battling for the right to mate and carve out their harem of females. The loud chorus of bellowing and grunting seals locked in battle creates a truly unforgettable experience.
For those interested in witnessing this spectacle of nature, the best times to visit are from November to March, with the peak of births usually occurring in January and the peak of mating around Valentine's Day. "This lookout point is a fantastic spot for observing sea elephants during their birthing season. Easily accessible parking, a dedicated ramp for strolling, and informative guides make it a must-visit. Witnessing baby seals with their attentive mothers enhances the overall experience. In addition, the spectacle includes fascinating interactions as bulls engage in dominance displays through captivating fights. This adds an exciting element to the overall experience at the lookout point."
"Easy to find parking. Main viewing strip could be crowded so I would suggest using the walking trail to the right of the main deck. Seals are still visible but not as crowded. Could not find trash cans. Great place to watch the surf."
"Great stop to see the elephant seals! I've been here several times. At times you can barely see the sand for all the seals. This visit they were there, just not as many. Still totally worth a stop, they are fun to watch."
