About the Griot Museum of Black History
The Griot Museum of Black History, located at 2505 Saint Louis Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri, is a must-visit tourist attraction and museum that showcases the rich history and culture of the Black community. Visitors can explore various exhibits and learn about the important contributions of Black individuals throughout history.
One unique feature of the museum is the use of the rammed earth technique, which is highlighted in the Asaase Rebuilt workshop. Visitors can design and create their own miniature rammed earth sculpture to be displayed in a future museum exhibit or taken home as a souvenir. Advance registration is required for this workshop, so be sure to sign up early!
In addition to the fascinating exhibits, visitors can also shop for handmade items in the Motherland Museum Shop, featuring a collection of items from Accra, Ghana. Whether you're looking for a gift for a loved one or something special for yourself, you're sure to find something unique in the shop.
The museum is also embarking on a spectacular art project called "Asaase III," which will be an earthwork made of locally-sourced materials. This public project will feature curved sculptures resembling walls of varying heights, positioned outside the museum's entrance. Thanks to the generous support of the Taylor family, this ambitious project is set to make a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of St. Louis.
Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Griot Museum of Black History and experience the transformative power of art and history. The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., subject to COVID-19 restrictions. Reviews of Griot Museum of Black History
"I'm a charter bus driver for Brittany Wood Middle School in University City district interesting museum black history for the students."
"It's packed with information and highlights the experiences of some overlooked figures in American history. I especially liked the information about York, who was enslaved by William Clark, and the displays about early Black Protestant churches in US history. The wax figures were amazingly crafted as well."
"The entry fee is very reasonable at $10. The employees inside are extremely helpful and accommodating. I was able to learn a few new things about Black history that was nice to know. Keep up the good work!!"
"A very interesting museum with unique exhibits that are a mix of entertaining and moving. The Josephine Baker exhibit is beautiful. While the exhibit about the slave trade and the middle passage was heart wrenching and thought provoking. Definitely one of the more unique attractions of St Louis."
